Request – I have to prove myself to you – Part Three

Six months later

You watched Kayce come into the main house dining room. You knew after his eyes scanned the place he would be confused.

Your side of the table wasn't off course, Tate sat to your left while the chair to your right 3a empty, reserved for Kayce. John was at the head as always, and Beth was next to John, across from where Kayce would sit. But then there was a strange kid next to Beth, followed by a very panic-looking Rip.

"Sorry I'm late," Kayce mumbled, his hands squeezed your shoulders as he placed a kiss on the back of your head.

"Nonsense," Beth smiled, and it even made you confused. "Now our table is complete."

"What is going on?" Kayce mumbled to you as he scooted in his chair.

"No idea," You held your glass in front of your lips.

John was eyeing Beth as well, as she plated the kid and Rip's plate. You raised your eyebrow as she looked at you and handed you the plate of steaks.

"Serve your men," Beth waited for you.

"Serve my...men?" You tilted your head to the side.

Kayce didn't say anything but reached across you and took the plate. He held it for Tate to pick a steak and then placed one on your plate before his own. Beth watched her brother and then looked up at you.

"I serve my men...just like my mom did when she ran this place," Beth's icy stare was strong.

"Beth," John grunted.

"She's fine," You didn't look away from your sister-in-law. "We just have different opinions of equality."

"HA!" Beth laughed.

The group started to eat in silence then. The awkwardness was palpable as Kayce looked at you again while he chewed his steak. You shrugged your shoulders.

"Alright, enough," John sighed. "Who is this?"

He was pointing to the kid.

"I'm Carter," the kid said.

"He's ours," Beth smiled.

"Yours?" John asked.

"Sir," Rip started.

"Shut the fuck up, honey," Beth snapped. "He's ours."

Later that evening

"What was that?" Kayce asked as you both settled into your bed.

Tate was asleep in his room at the main house while Kayce wrapped his arm around you in your room. You shook your head like you couldn't even find words to explain what you just witnessed.

"That's why I didn't say anything," You mumbled into Kayce's bare chest.

"It might have sent Beth over the edge," Kayce ran his fingers up and down your arm.

You glanced at your left hand on his chest. On your ring finger was a simple gold band, nothing fancy but perfect. Lee never got you a ring, it was just almost like a decree. But Kayce wanted a ring on your hand. He wanted people to know you picked him.

"We can try later," You pressed a kiss to his chest. "Or we can just invite them to the ceremony and have it be a surprise."

"You're facing Beth's rath on your own," Kayce chuckled.

"You scared of a girl?" You joked.

"I'm scared of all the women in my life," Kayce said.

You leaned up on your elbow and looked down at him. Kayce reached up and cupped your cheek, smiling up at you.

"You sure you still wanna come back into this family?" He asked you.

"I never left it," You leaned in and kissed him.

A Month Later

You felt Kayce press his lips against yours with applause in the background. Your wedding was very simple, right on the ranch with the mountain range as your backdrop. Only close family and a few friends. Your maid of honor was Beth, Kayce's best man was Tate and John officiated the ceremony.

It was perfect.

The reception was a barn dance. The wranglers had cleared everything out and brought in chairs and tables. The crowd stayed well into the night, dancing and laughing. You and Kayce were able to sneak off in the early morning hours but you heard the music until dawn.

Three Months Later

"Kayce!" You called from the bathroom.

"What's wrong?" Kayce walked in and saw you sitting on the closed toilet.

"Remember last week when we decided to throw out my pills?" You looked up at him.

"Yeah?" Kayce walked over to you and saw three sticks on the sink.

All had two positive lines.

"I think all it took was that," You looked down.

"You're pregnant?" Kayce asked you.

"No," You rolled your eyes. "These are Tate's."

"Shut up," Kayce picked you up, kissing your cheek as you giggled in his arms.

Six Months Later

You were hot and sweaty and exhausted.

But when your little boy was placed into your arms everything around you disappeared. Kayce sat down next to you, his arm around you tightly as he kissed your temple.

"Hey baby," You cooed. "I'm your Momma."

"You did good, baby," Kayce whispered to you.

You looked up at him and shared a sweet kiss.

"Okay parents," The nurse walked over with the paperwork. "Does Baby Dutton have a first name I can put down?"

"Lee," You and Kayce said at the same time.
