You were settled against your boyfriend, Mark, on one side of the booth. Mark's arm as over the back of the booth and a few empty beer bottles were in front of you. Kayce, your oldest friend was across from you, sipping on his beer slowly.

You had only been dating Mark for a few months and it was...fine. You wouldn't say that Mark was 'the one' for you or anything, but until the school started back in the fall, he was fine for the summer. You only had one more semester to go and then you'd be able to start your residency program in Bozeman next spring.

"I'm just telling her she could be a nurse here or in Darby and not bother with having to move away," Mark was trying, and failing, to get Kayce to agree with him that you should stay with Mark and work here instead of going to Bozeman.

"She wants to be a doctor, man," Kayce sighed. "Let her do what she wants."

"What about what I want?" Mark asked, clearly drunk.

"Ain't about you," Kayce grunted, playing with the label on his beer bottle.

Kayce caught your eye for a split second and you felt your cheeks warm up. Lately, you had been feeling a certain way about your friend...but you were dating Mark and Kayce seemed to not be interested in you that way. That, or he was being a gentleman about the whole thing.

"I'm gonna go get another beer," You said standing up.

"Grab me two," Mark hollered at you.

You waited a minute before thanking the bar tender and walking back over to the guys. They hadn't noticed you, but you caught the tail end of their conversation.

"You ain't good enough for her," Kayce snapped.

"Fuck off, redneck," Mark laughed. "You'll never have her."

You stopped at the table and looked between them. Kayce looked like he was ready to fight Mark, while your boyfriend looked drunk as a skunk. Setting the beers down you rolled your eyes and walked away form them.

Flashforward to Present

You shook your head, hoping to get the memory out of your mind. The only reason you had thought about Mark was because he pulled up with a few other guys to the bonfire your friends were throwing.

After you walked away that night, Mark came after you. He got rough with you and pushed you into his truck. You left him that night, crying all the way home only to take him back the next morning when he apologized. But when you went back to school in the fall...Mark went back to all his ex-girlfriends. You only found out Thanksgiving and the two of you were completely done by Christmas.

The unfortunate part was Kayce had started to see some girl from the Reservation and when you tried to tell him, the girl kept him from you. They didn't work out, Kayce calling you the next summer and that's when the tow of you rekindled whatever it had been you were feeling for him a year before that.

You saw a beer held down in front of your face. Smiling, you grabbed it as Kayce settled in behind you, pulling you back against him. The two of you were sitting around the fire with your friends and a few of the wranglers from the ranch, catching up now that you all were adults and either still in school or had real-life jobs.

"Give me one!"

You glanced over and saw Mark walk up. Kayce tensed underneath you while you took a sip of your beer.

"Shit, Y/N?" Mark was looking right at you. "How long has it been?"

He was already drunk.

"Not long enough," You mumbled.

"Still trying to be a doctor?" He laughed. "Or did Kayce make you a nurse?"

You felt Kayce try to stand up, but you pushed back against him.

"Fuck off, Mark," You sighed.

"Here I thought you'd at least do better than me," Mark laughed.

You couldn't stop Kayce now as he stood up. The group around you all became quiet and the air was thick with tension. Mark was chuckling at Kayce whose caramel eyes were dark from the campfire.

"Hit a nerve, Dutton?" Mark smirked.

How did you ever think that guy was cute looking?

"How about you just go home?" Kayce asked.

"How about you fuck off?" Mark stepped up to him.

"Kayce, please," You didn't want him to fight.

"Yeah..." Mark laughed "Listen to your bitch, Kayce."

Kayce swung at him, his fist hitting right next to Mark's temple. The crowd seemed to step back and scatter as Kayce and Mark pushed each other back and forth, knuckles cutting against skin while they tried to avoid the fire.

"She's mine now," Kayce hit Mark again. "You ain't gonna hurt her again."

"Kayce!" You tried to reach out but felt an arm wrap around you and pick you up, moving you back some.

Rip stepped up and while you could tell he was pulling Kayce off Mark; Rip's fist did hit Mark in the jaw once. But it could have just been an accident.

Rip took Kayce by his jacket and shoved him backwards. When Mark tried to swing, Rip grab his arm and swung him down into the dirt. You reached out and held one of Kayce's arms, trying to keep him from getting back in.

"Enough!" Yelled Rip.

Everyone was quiet.

"Y/N," Rip snapped. "Get him out of here. We've got rounds with his father tomorrow and I ain't about to have Kayce show up bloody and bruised."

You pulled on Kayce's arm, not wanting to argue with Rip. You didn't even wait to see what Rip did with Mark as you pushed Kayce into his truck. Walking around to the driver's side you glanced back, and Rip had Mark by his collar, walking him away.

The drive back to the ranch was quiet and when you got out and met Kayce at the front of the truck, you noticed him limping on his right side.

"Can I get you something for that?" You asked as the two of you made your way into the house and up the stairs.

"M'fine," Kayce grunted as he walked over to his bed and fell into it with a groan.

You helped him out of his boots and then sat down next to him, pushing his hair out of his face. There were a few bruises on his jaw and above his eye. Kayce let out a deep sigh as he turned into you.

"I hate it when you fight," You frowned.

"Sorry," Kayce looked up at you. "He deserved it."

"I don't care about him," You rolled your eyes. "I care about you, and I don't need anyone messing up your face."

"He barely touched me," Kayce laughed.

You pressed down on the bruise above his eye with your thumb. Kayce hissed, swatting away your hand at your giggles. You leaned down, your lips right above his.

"You're an idiot," You whispered.

"I'm your idiot," Kayce gave you a love-sick smile.

"Uh huh," You nodded. "Don't I know it."

You pressed your lips to Kayce's as you lay down next to him.
