"How am I supposed to just sit here and be okay with this?" You asked Kayce.

"We talked about this," Kayce sighed. "I told you there would be things I would have to do for this job you wouldn't like."

"Don't put this all on me," You pointed a finger at him. "Don't make me the only one who sees how dangerous this job is."

"I'm not saying it's not dangerous," Kayce ran his fingers through his hair. "But I am telling you to trust me."

"I do trust you, Kayce!" You cried. "It's everyone else I don't trust. It's the other people holding the guns I don't trust!"

"I took care of the other people with the guns!" Kayce yelled back.

"Do you hear yourself right now?" You looked at him shocked. "Kayce...you killed a man today."

"I was there," Kayce looked at you.

Kayce became Livestock Commissioner for his father two months ago. The first month had been okay, a little shaky at times but not too bad. But then his father got him involved in a deal that went south on the reservation. Two nights ago, a cop was shot outside his vehicle, and now Kayce was walking through the front door with blood on his shirt and hands.

"What were you even doing on the reservation?" You asked him, crossing your arms. "That's not your jurisdiction."

"It is when it's cattle from ranchers I protect," Kayce argued.

"It's not your land," You fought back.

"God, Y/N...what do you want from me?" Kayce held his hands up in question.

"I want you to talk to me," You sighed. "I want you to tell me what happened. I wanna know why my husband is covered in blood."

"I told you it's not mine," Kayce said.

"That doesn't make me feel any better," You sunk your shoulders in defeat.

"There are things that if you knew..." Kayce shook his head and walked away from you, over to the couch, and sat down slowly on it.

You took a deep breath, counted to ten, and then walked over to where Kayce was and sat next to him. He watched you, his eyes tired.

"You're not protecting me by not telling me things," You spoke softly. "In fact, I think you hurt me more by keeping things from me."

"They're bad things," Kayce leaned back on the couch.

"I'm a big girl," You turned toward him. "I can handle it."

Kayce looked at you for a few seconds as if to judge if what you had just said was true. The two of you had been married for four years now. You had seen your fair share of questionable things on this ranch, and you had not only stuck by Kayce but also defended his family.

"I think I've earned your respect," You nodded to him.

"You have my respect, baby," Kayce reached out and cupped your cheek.

You sighed, swinging your right leg around and straddling Kayce on the couch. His hands found your waist as your fingers ran through his hair.

"Tell me what happened," Your hands ran down Kayce's shirt.

"They had the cattle," Kayce sighed.

"On the reservation?" You asked.

"Yeah," Kayce nodded. "But they wouldn't give them back. We tried to take them out but a small group0 ambushed us. They fired at us, even when we announced who we were."
