Are You Sure? (Part 1)

One Shot #7

Moana's POV

Today's just another typical day of being chief in the village of Montonui for me. I'm doing my usual tasks, addressing important matters, and doing household chores for both my parents and myself.  As I'm doing all of these daily rituals, my mind begins to wander to some place else, the place being the ocean. Being chief has weighed be down with so many responsibilities that I barely have any time to myself anymore nor do I have time to adventure with Maui. Maui's been staying in the village as a special guest for awhile and I feel horrible because we've only hung out twice since he's been here these past two months. Not wanting to be chief today, I dash to Maui's hut, pull him out of it, and drag him down to the shore before he even has a chance to object. When we're down there, I stop for a minute and explain myself to him.

"I know you're probably wondering why I've dragged you off in such a hurry." He laughs. "I was actually so please explain yourself." I try to cover up my pain with a smile. "I was thinking I could take the day off from being chief and we could go sailing on the outskirts of the island." He gives me a half smile. "That sounds great Moana, but I can tell something's on your mind and you're just using sailing as an escape from having to talk about it. I'll only go sailing with you if you tell me what's on your mind." I sigh. "It's nothing. Let's just go sailing already." "Moana" he says with a serious tone, "Talk to me. Please."

A lump forms in my throat. "You've been a guest here for two months and I feel like I've treated you like crap. I haven't really spent any time with you. The responsibilities of being chief are taking my life away and the truth is... I don't know if I want to be chief anymore." Maui looks at me in shock. "You can't possibly mean that Moana. You've worked your whole life to be chief. It's been your goal and dream. Are you sure you really want to give that up? If so, what are you giving it up for?" I nod. "I'm sure. There are many other people in the village that are far more fit to rule than I. I'm sure they'd be delighted to take my place." Maui frowns at me. "I hope I'm not the cause of it. Ever since my arrival, you haven't been as focused as you normally are and it concerns me."

"No, no, no, Maui, you're not the blame here. I've been thinking about this ever since our voyage to restore the heart. Our voyage made me see that I'm destined to be out on the sea, adventuring for all of my days, just like you." Maui chuckles at that. "Yeah the ocean certainly is made for you Mo. Are you sure you that a life of voyaging is what you want? A life like that comes with some costs." "I'm sure Maui. Now can we go sailing please? I promise I'll talk to my parents about this, but not today. I'll do it tomorrow when I'm in a better mental state." He sighs. "Fine, but tomorrow you're telling them, even if I have to drag you to their hut to do so."
