It's Been Fifteen Years

One Shot #10

Maui's POV

Flashback...

Me: "I'm gonna miss you drumstick."

Moana: "You could come with us you know. My people are going to need a master wayfinder."

Me: *Smiles* "They already have one." *A tattoo near my heart shifts into one of Moana, smiling and waving with her oar in hand.*

Moana: *Gave me both the most heartwarming and heartbreaking smile before throwing her arms around me.*

Me:  Her actions completely got me surprised, but I pulled her towards her and hugged her back. It was the most wonderful hug I'd ever had. We let the moment linger for a few seconds before pulling apart. When we did, even Mini Maui was sad to say goodbye as he was waving with a tear streaming down his cheek.

Moana: "See you out there Maui."

Me: "See you out there, Moana." I then shifted into hawk form, took one last look at her, and flew off into the sunset.

Fast Forward... Fifteen Years Later (In Mortal Years)...

It's been a long time since I've seen the perky mortal girl I sailed the ocean and restored the heart of Te Fiti with. I think it's been at least five years. Time tends to be different from for those who are  immortal rather than mortal. I've flew over and swam by Montonui a few times in the beginning, but then I stopped. I think I stopped because I saw how happy Moana was to be home again and I didn't want to get in the way of that.

I really miss her though. Everyday since her and I went our separate ways, my heart longs to be near her once again. I need to get over my pride and just go see her. I'm sure she'll be happy to see me. It might be awkward at first, but we'd get through it. I grab my hook, shift into shark form, and begin swimming towards Montonui. When I get tired of swimming, I'll switch to hawk form and fly the rest of the way. Though, I like feel of the waves splashing against me. It not only keeps me cool on the heat, but it helps me stay alert.

Based on the current, it should only take me two days to get to Montonui, that is without stopping to rest. Rest is at the back of my mind right now. I'll rest when I'm finally reunited with Moana.

Two days later...

From a distance, I see the outskirts of Montonui and practically do a victory dance in the air. I increase my speed out of excitement.  I land smoothly. When I land, I'm face to face with a shocked and  much older Moana. We stand there in silence for a minute, taking in the sight of one another, as if we're mentally asking ourselves if the other is really here. "Maui, I can't believe you're here." She pulls me in for a hug, which I gladly accept. "Did you really think you'd never see me again?" She gives me a sincere smile before hitting me on the stomach. "Why did it take you fifteen years to come?" I look at her in confusion. "No Moana, it's only been five years." She puts her hands on her hips. "Maui, how old do you think I am?" I bite my lip. "Twenty..." "Well you're wrong. I'm thirty one."

Shock and guilt run through my veins. "I've been gone for fifteen years of your life? Gee Moana, I am so sorry. After our voyage, I had a few islands to restore and business to take care of with Te Fiti and Tamatoa in Lalotai. I promise you that I'm back and here to stay. I won't ever go anywhere without telling you where I'm going again." I feel a tear trickle down my cheek, but I don't wipe it away. I want Moana to know how sincere I am about being gone for so long. "I've missed watching you grow up and now you're this amazing, beautiful woman." She gives me a small smile and leans her on my shoulder. "I forgive you Maui. I shouldn't have been so hard on you. You're Maui, demigod of the wind and sea, of course you had business to take care of and people to save. It's selfish for me to want you all to myself."

I raise an eyebrow. "What do you mean by that Moana?" She looks right past me rather than at me. "Moana, look at me. This is important. What did you mean by that?" She sighs. "It's stupid Maui. Really I'd rather not get into it. You'll either tease me, react negatively, or both." "Moana, please tell me. I'm not going to tease you, shout at you, or storm off. That man is no more. You know that."  "When I turned twenty, I was married to a suitor named Nakai that my parents set me up with. He was this awkward and simple minded guy. He wasn't mean, but I knew he wasn't the one for me. The marriage only lasted a year and I haven't been with anyone since, due to one reason. There was always someone else at the back of my mind."

I sit there in silence, absorbing everything she has said so far, as well as listening to the rest of what she has to say. "The someone at the back of my mind... was you. I drove Nakai made in our marriage. All I ever talked about was voyaging and you. My failed marriage gave me a wake up call. It made me realize that I'm not going to live forever and I want to spend my life with the man I truly love, you." My heart flutters. "You.... you love me?" She nods. "I always have Maui. I just hid it really well because I was afraid of rejection." "Moana... how long have you felt this way?" She gives me a pained smile. "Since we restored the heart." I stare at her surprise. "How come you never told me? If you had told me sooner, you would known that I'm in love with you."

Moana begins to cry and I wrap my arms around her. "Not all of this is your fault Maui, part of it is mine too. I let too much time go by without telling how I really feel and now I fear that it's too late for us." Seriousness takes over. "Moana, it's not too late for us. If you want to be together, we can be together." "But Maui... one day I'm going to die and I'll just be a distant memory. Eventually you'll move on and find someone else." I put my hands on Moana's shoulder and gently shake her. "Moana, listen to me. I'd rather have forty or fifty wonderful years with you than live another day without being with you. So what do you say, will you be mine Moana?"

Moana pulls me towards her as if I'm her lifeline and begins to kiss me. I get into the rhythm of the kiss and feel my beat out of my chest. Moana's lips are soft and firm, the perfect combination. They feel warm against my rather cold ones. When we pull apart, Moana looks deep into my eyes and says "I'm yours Maui." I smile and pull her in for another kiss. I've spent fifteen years waiting for this moment and I have to say, it was worth the wait.

Hoped that you guys liked this one shot! By the way, the video pinned above is the ending scene to Maui as well as the scene that correlates to the flashback. Just thought I'd put in their so it can hit you in your feels as much as it does to me.  :) -Mary
