A Broken Man (Part 6)

One Shot #27 (Cont.)

Moana's POV

 A few hours later...

I've managed to wash all of Maui's clothes, dry them, and have a small lunch while he was in physical therapy. His doctor is bringing him back in now so I pretend to read a magazine. I don't want to stare at Maui, especially if he's really upset. He's already flipped out on me once today. As he gets lifted back into bed, he's yelling at his doctor. I refuse to meet his eye until he's calmed down enough to talk. "MOANA!" Maui's booming voice forces me look at him. "Y---yyess Maui?" "Did you do as you were told?" I nod and show him proof that I did. "Good job. At least someone in this room can do something right." He glares at his doctor who just brushes the snarky comment off. "I'll be back to check on you later Maui." "Yeah, yeah" Maui grumbles aloud.

"Have you always been this bitter Maui?" "Have you always been so nosy?" I giggle. "Fair enough and the answer is yes. Now give me your honest answer." Maui sighs. "Yes and no." I look at him in confusion, motioning for him to expand on his statement. "I was a successful wrestler for a little over ten years before my rein came to an end due to the accident. I've had all the money in the world, but no one to share it with. By the way, before you ask, I am the youngest wrestler to ever have been inducted into the WWE at fifteen years old ten years ago. I don't mean to be cocky. I'm just filling in the blanks for you."

I nod slowly, continuing to listen to him. "I'm grateful for the success I've had in my life so far, believe me I am, but I've never had any real friends or relationships. All everyone in my life has done is try to use me for fame and fortune. As amazing as this business is, it's often quite lonely." "What about your family?" Maui huffs. "What family? My parents abandoned me at birth and I got tossed around in the foster care system until I got discovered. From there, Adam took me under his wing and let me live with him for a few years. I only just got my feet on the ground two years ago. It's ironic because now my feet don't work at all."

I frown. "I'm sorry this happened to you Maui. I know that I'm just your maid so what I say doesn't mean anything ,but I still wanted to tell you." Maui does the unthinkable. He gives me a small smile. "Thank you. I appreciate that Moana. I'm sorry for taking out my anger on you. You've done nothing wrong. In fact, you've done good today. I can imagine the pressure you're going through. First days of work often suck." I laugh. "You're right about that, but thank you for apologizing. That means a lot to me."

"Moana, I don't mean to pry in your business, but can I ask you a question?" I tense up a bit. "What's your question?" Maui stares at me strangely. "Adam was talking to me earlier about if I had read your job application, I would find out some heartbreaking things. Given that I'm now I'm a shell of man, I was curious to know how bad you have it." I frown. "I don't want to burden you with my silly problems. It's nothing." Maui frowns back at me. "Please tell me. It's probably no worse than this." He uses his eyes to motion to his broken body.

"Well I'm a seventeen year old senior in high school who has no income whatsoever other than what I'm about to make from this job and social security, which will end for me once I turn eighteen. I live in a crappy house in the slums. My father is an abusive alcoholic who attempted to have sex with me last night. My mother walked out on me five years ago and I haven't heard from her since. I have no friends. I barely get by in school. I have depression, anxiety, and many more crippling issues. In addition, my self esteem sucks and I want to kill myself almost everyday." Maui stares at me in shock, his mouth frozen in an "O" shape. "Well I'm going to be honest with you, I wasn't expecting all of that." I laugh sadly. "Yeah I bet."

"I'm so sorry Moana. That's horrible. I'm not being sarcastic for once. I swear." I give Maui a small smile. "I know." "How?" I laugh. "Because for the first time today, you're not looking at me in complete disgust. That's how everyone looks at me." "Well I'll my best not to be such an asshole. I'm going to warn you that I'll have my moments, but I won't take my anger out on you." "Thank you." He nods. I glance up at the clock, seeing that it's nearly dinner time. "I should probably get going. It's the end of my shift and if I get home late, my father will be mad at me. After last night, I can't afford to piss him off anymore." Maui looks at me sadly. "I understand. Good night. I'll see you tomorrow Moana." "Good night Maui." I grab my bag and slowly leave the room. "Moana wait!" I stop in my tracks. "Yes Maui?" He stares at me sympathetically, which makes me both happy and sad. "Be careful okay?" I nod and leave the room. I take the elevator down to the lobby, get in my car, and drive to my home that is so far from ever being home to me.
