Harvard Soccer (Part 9)

One Shot #36 (Cont.)

Moana's POV

Melody was kind enough to drive me home from practice early, though I feel terrible. Not only am I loosing practice time for our first big game next week, but I'm taking that time away from Melody as well. I apologized to her about twenty times between when we got to her car and when I got home. To be honest with you, I think stress is impacting me severely right now. It's finally starting to sink in that in just three days time, I'll be moving out of my childhood home into a dorm with a roommate that I barely know. I only live twenty minutes from Harvard, but it feels like two hundred miles. I'll be able to come home some weekends and vacations which eases my mind a bit. Plus there's this newfound relationship with Maui. It's not a relationship, but it's certainly not a friendship either. It's like this awkward in between stage. I really need to get my head clear. First, I'm getting some sleep. I plop down onto my bed and fall asleep instantly.

Four hours later...

I wake up feeling somewhat better than earlier. I grab my phone off my bedside table and see that I have three missed calls and two texts from Maui. I frown. I probably worried him so much. I scroll through my contacts, press his name, and let the phone ring. He picks up on the third ring. "Moana, I'm so glad to hear from you. Did you get any rest?" "Hey Maui. I'm glad you picked up. I slept for a few hours. I'm about to eat supper and then relax a bit before I go back to bed again. I'll be okay though. I just stressed myself out a little too much is all. I promise I'll be at practice bright and early tomorrow. Do you mind if I come a few minutes early?" A deep throaty chuckle comes into the phone. "Not at all princess. I was going to ask you the same thing. By the way, I have some news that will cheer you up."

"What would that be?" "I talked to head of room and board today, pulled a few strings based on my rank here, and got you Melody as your roommate. I called her a little while ago to tell her. All she did was squeal into the phone for a solid fifteen minutes." I then end up squealing myself. "Thank you so much Maui. That's so amazing. You're so amazing. God I love you!" It takes me a few seconds to realize what I just said. As I do, I gasp in horror and put a hand over my mouth. How can I be so stupid sometimes? "Moana... you what?" "I'm so sorry Maui. I got all excited and the words just slipped right of my mouth. They mean nothing. I promise." His voice then becomes a tad hurt. "Oh, that's too bad Moana because I was hoping they do." I let out a breath that I've been building up for awhile now. "What are you trying to say Maui?" He sighs into the phone. "I guess I'm trying to say that I love you too. Look I know it's really soon and you've only been in my life for a short time, but it feels so right. I think you know that Moana."

"Maui, I need to ask you a serious question." "I'm all ears Moana." "Are you willing to risk everything to be with me, including your job is the wrong person happens to find out?" "Absolutely. Loving you is definitely worth the risk." "Maui... I want to be with you, but I will hate myself until the end of time if you lose your job over being with me." "Moana, stop. I want to be with you because I'm smitten with you. Plus, it's not illegal. You're eighteen years old. You're of age. Plus, I'm only your coach, not your professor. So there's less chance of repercussions of this relationship. So what do you say Moana, are you in this?" I feel a smile creep upon my face for the first time all day. "I'm in this Maui." "Good. I'll let you go now. Rest up tonight and see you in the morning princess. I love you." I kiss my phone in a super dorky fashion. "I love you too Maui."
