Closure

One Shot #19

Moana's POV

Maui and I are about to enter to enter Lalatoi, the realm of monsters, to get Maui's fishhook back. The usually overconfident demigod of the wind and sea is unusually quiet right now. His arms and legs are shaking quite noticeably. "Maui, are you okay?" He jumps back, as if my question startled him. "I'm just a little nervous is all." "How come?" He sighs and runs a hand through his hair. "Tamatoa and I have a bit of history, a history that goes deeper what the legends say." I raise an eyebrow. "What kind of history?" Maui gazes up down at me sadly. "You'll find out soon enough. Now let's go get my hook back." Maui does a strange dance that triggers the entrance to open up. He jumps down and I follow in pursuit.

We go through a series of tunnels before being shot out of one them. Maui lands first and I land on top of him. He groans. "Geez Moana, I'm not a landing bay." I laugh nervously. "Sorry Maui. Poor timing I guess." "Yeah no kidding" he mumbles. Both of get up slowly and make our way deeper into Lalatoi until we're in Tamatoa's lair. As we enter, I can see Maui tensing up. I put a hand on his back. "I don't know what happened between the two of you, but I'm sure everything will be fine. Try to relax Maui." He nods and I feel him let go a little bit on the tension in his posture that was there a moment ago.

Tamatoa's back is faced to us so we have a moment to discuss a game plan. "Moana, you need to do exactly as I say." I nod, motioning for him to talk. "I'm climb up onto his shell quietly to get my hook back, but in order to do that, we're going to need a diversion." I give him a look of confusion until it hits me that he wants me to be the diversion. "Are you kidding me Maui? What if he eats me?" He grunts. "He won't eat you. Once I get my hook, all the attention will be on me. All you have to do is pace back in forth in front of him for a couple of minutes. If that fails, just get him to talk about himself and shiny things. That tends to work every time."

I sigh, but make my way over to Tamatoa, pacing back and forth in front of him. "Wow, look at me, I'm a mortal girl and I'm wearing such nice shiny jewelry." The ground begins to shake and Tamatoa begins to reveal himself. With a sickening grin, he grabs with me a claw and dangles me up in the air. "Why hello there. You're an awkward looking thing." He pats me up and down. "Why you're a mortal. That's fascinating. So tell me mortal girl, what brings you to the realm of monsters?" Before I can answer that question, I look up to the top of Tamatoa's shell and see Maui standing there, with a fish hook in hand, but a rather glum expression on his face. Tamatoa notices the movement on his shell so he looks up also, though he has a different reaction at seeing Maui.

Tamatoa drops me instantly and shifts his full attention onto Maui. I notice the way the two of them stare at each other. Maui looks guilty and Tamatoa looks... heartbroken. I can tell that there is some history between them just on their facial expressions alone. Maui looks down at me. "Moana, can I have a moment alone with Tamatoa?" I nod and hide behind a rock to give them the privacy to talk, but can step in if need be.

Maui's POV

Tamatoa stares into my soul while I can't even get myself to look at him. "Maui... what are you doing here?" I fidget nervously. "I'm here to get my hook back, which I have, so it's time for me to." I try heading out, but Tamatoa blocks me from leaving. "You broke my heart and left me for someone else. I took your hook so I get bait you down here and get the proper closure I deserve. I want to move on from you, but I can't until you tell me why I wasn't good enough for you."

My heart stops beating and freezes in place. "Tamatoa, what I did was wrong. I should have told you honestly that I was losing feelings and..." I look down at the ground. Tamatoa snarls at me. "AND WHAT?  I WANT TO HEAR THE WORDS COME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH." My voice becomes nothing more than a whisper "I fell in love with someone else." Tamatoa turns his back to me and I hear sobs escape from him, each one growing louder and sadder. "If you were in love with someone else, you never should have said you wanted to be with me Maui. You were my first love. A first love stays with someone forever, even if they move on to be with someone else. You tainted the way I view love to the point where I might never fall in love again. I'm just going to be in this stupid cave, alone until the end of eternity."

I take a step towards him and put a hand on his cheek, causing a shiver to run up both my shine and his. "Things may not have worked out between us, but I have no doubt in my mind that you won't be alone forever. You'll find someone someday Tamatoa. Despite your flaws, there is good in you. If there wasn't, I never would have been with you in the first place." He gives me a small but sincere smile. "Thank you Maui. That was the closure that I needed." "Like you said, I owed you that. I'm going to go now. I don't want to hurt you anymore. I wish you all the best Tamatoa." Tamatoa catches me surprise by pulling me in for a hug. "I think that one day, you and I could be good friends. For now though, I just need time to get over you." "I know. Take care Tamatoa." He smiles sadly at me. "You too Maui. By the way, I promise not to steal your fishhook again."

I silently nod and make my way out of the cave. I hear footsteps behind me and realize it's Moana. She stares at me with a pitiful expression. "I guess you heard all of that. Right?" She nods hesitantly. "We all make mistakes Maui, especially when it comes to love, but you should be proud of yourself. You apologized to Tamatoa and finally gave him the closure he deserved." "You're right Moana. You know for such a young girl, child, thing, you're pretty cool." She smiles. "Thank you Maui. You're not so bad yourself." Together her and I sail off into the night, letting the ocean decide where to take us next.
