The History Teacher And His Student (Part 1)

One Shot #23

Maui's POV

Today's my first day teaching Ancient Civilization at Honolulu High School. I just graduated from Honolulu University back in May and was guaranteed the job right away. In case your wondering, I also happen to be the youngest teacher to ever be teaching there at just twenty three years old. Ancient Civilization happens to be a freshman level class, which honestly is the best thing ever. The freshman, like myself, are completely new to the school so it'll be a learning experience for us all.

I pace around my classroom for the twentieth time as my students begin to pour in one by one. I say hello to all of them and most of them are pretty friendly. The bell rings and I'm ready to dive into the speech I prepared when a girl with an interesting necklace and long, dark hair comes running in. "I'm sorry I'm late. I had trouble opening my locker." Everyone laughs at her and she looks down at the ground in embarrassment as she heads to her seat. Normally I'd be sarcastic, but there's something about the nature of this girl where I'd hate to do anything to hurt her feelings. So for today, I'll let it slide.

"Hey everyone. My name's Maui and this is Ancient Civilization." A snotty looking girl chomps on gum and looks at me in disgust. "Um excuse me, aren't we supposed to call you by your stupid last name?" I roll my eyes. "For your information Hawaiian Barbie who's clearly been to too many tanning booths this summer, I prefer to go by Maui." That gets a few chuckles from the class. Without any more interruptions from her or anyone else, I quickly go through the syllabus I prepared two weeks ago and allow them to ask any questions or make a comment if it's appropriate. No one asks any questions or makes any comments so everyone talks amongst themselves or sits in silence until the bell rings.

Everyone clears out of my classroom quickly, except for the girl who arrived late. She comes over my desk with a silly smile on her face. I raise an eyebrow. "It's Moana, right?" She nods. "What can I do for you?" "I just wanted to tell you that you seem really cool and that I think I'm going to enjoy this class." For the first time today, I feel a smile form across my face. "I hope you enjoy it too. I'll see you tomorrow Moana. Have a good day." A slight blush creeps across her face, but she plays it off. "You too Maui." I watch her leave with that smile still on my face. I wish every student was like her. If they were, it'd sure make this job a hell of a lot less stressful.

Hoped that you guys liked this part of this one shot! I also got this random idea in my head last night on the road and decided to do something with it as well. This one shot will be a multi-parter, though I don't know exactly how many parts just yet. :) -Mary
