A Weaker Version (Part 2)

One Shot #9 (Cont.)

Maui's POV

I sit at the edge of the boat in silence, a million thoughts racing through my head such as who is Moana, how did she manage to find me, and what am I going to be facing on this voyage. Though I have to say, I'm amazed by Moana's courage to sail across the sea to find me. That's not easy, especially for a young teenager like herself. From the looks of her, she looks about fifteen or sixteen in mortal years. A lifetime ago, I was teenager myself, though I stopped aging soon after. Appearance wise, I look about twenty five according to most, but the reality is I've been alive for three thousand years. Needless to say, I've made a lot of mistakes that I've wished I could fix, but haven't  had the balls to actually face them and do so.

"So Moana, tell me about yourself." She huffs. "Why would I tell a monster like you anything personal about me?" I wince at that comment and I can feel my heart beginning to fall about. I haven't been in contact with a human being in a thousand years and now that I am, I'm realizing why isolation is the best place for me. I am a monster. Every mortal on this Earth is afraid of me. I was on their good side for awhile and as soon as I stole the heart out of greed, they no longer saw me as a hero.

"Look Moana, I know I've made a lot of mistakes and I've spent a thousand years in isolation regretting that everyday, but at least give me a chance. I mean I could have battled you back there, but yet I chose to come with you peacefully. That has to mean something, right?" She sighs. "I guess it's a start, but I'm still not telling you a lot about me. You have to earn my trust." "That's understandable. Anyways, according to our current track, we're about four days away from Te Fiti." She gives me a small nod. As I watch her sail, I can see her posture slumping, probably out of exhaustion. "Moana, you look like you haven't sleep. I can take over for a bit." She doesn't argue with me and silently makes her way to the opposite of the boat and lies down. I adjust the sails and take over. The wind whips my hair around in every direction, but the breeze feels nice in this extreme heat. Some part of me is glad that Moana's asleep because I honestly need some time to myself to think.

A few hours later...

Moana wakes up slowly, sleep obviously doing her some good. She looks refreshed and much more alert than she was earlier. "I'm glad you got some sleep Moana." "Me too. Anyways Maui, I have a question for you." I raise an eyebrow. "And I probably have an answer so ask away." "Why are you being so nice to me? You're Maui, demigod of the wind and sea. You're much more important than I am. I figured you'd be rubbing it in my face." I sigh. "Most people assume that. I'm guessing someone in your family and/or village fed those dreadful stories into your head. Am I right?" She hesitates, but nods. "I thought so. Well Moana, I'm trying my best to change. I got a reality check recently, which made me realize that I need to fix my mistakes and become a better person. The thing is I can't entirely do that alone, which is why I'm glad you're here with me. I can tell you're a good person and maybe, just maybe, some of your goodness will rub off on me."

For the first time since we left my island, Moana gives me a small smile. "Thank you Maui, I appreciate that. I hope some of it does rub off on you. Good would suit you well." I smile back. "Yeah, I think it would too."
