May I Have This Dance? (Part 1)

One Shot #13

Maui's POV

I've been staying in Montonui for awhile now and it's truly become home for me. Everyone here is so warm and friendly. It's such a refreshing change compared to a lot of the islands I've been to throughout my life, including my own, which I'd rather not go into detail about. Let's just say it was a bit of a downer. Anyways, the villagers are having this major festival next week. According to the giggly teenage girls in the village, it's a dance. Though, people of all ages attend it and seem to have fun. Moana's been talking about it nonstop. If I didn't know any better, I might say that she wants me to ask her, which would be silly because there's a million young guys around her age that she could go with. Why would she want to go to a dance with a three thousand year old awkward looking demigod like myself?

Speaking of Moana, I find her helping her mother with some gardening. I smile at the sight of Moana awing over the beauty of the flowers and the way she tucks some in her hair, right behind her ear. Little does she know that the beauty of the flowers doesn't even compare to the beauty of her. I take a deep breath and make my way over to her. When she sees my shadow looming over her, she smiles up at me. "Hey Maui. How's it going?" I smile back. "It's going good thanks. By the looks of things here, I take it you're good." "I'm perfect... well almost." I raise an eyebrow. "What do you mean Moana?"

"Well the dance is next week and I still have yet to be asked by the guy I really like." My heart begins to race. She can't possibly be referring to me. Can she? "Mo, I've seen you be asked to the dance by twenty different guys in just these past two days alone." She sighs. "Maui, they only like me for my status, not who I am. They could care less about the little things such as my favorite things to do or even my favorite color. They just want power. Nothing more, nothing less." I take a shy step closer to her. "Well what I told you there is one guy who likes you for you, not just for status." "I'd love to meet that guy." I look down at the ground. "What if you already have?"

Moana stares into my soul. "Maui, what are you saying?" I can feel my heart bursting out of my chest at this point. I cup her face gently. "I'm saying that guy is me. I like you Moana... a lot. I'm tired of being scared of telling you how I really feel. So this is me, telling you how I feel. I'd be honored to take you to that dance next week." Moana's face lights up. "Really?" I nod. "Maui, I like you too. I always have. Why do you think I rejected all of those guys and have been pouting to you about the dance? It's because I've been hoping you'd ask me. To be honest, I'm surprised you like me Maui. I'm a silly teenage girl."

I take Moana's hands in mine. "But Moana, you're so much more. You're like sunshine. When you enter a room, you instantly put a smile on everyone's face. People can't help but be happy around you. You're also so loving. You go out of your way for the people of your village. They couldn't ask for a better soon to be chief than you." A tear slips down Moana's cheek and I wipe it away. "I have two questions for you Moana. One will you go to the dance with me?" She nods eagerly, causing me to chuckle. "Two, will you be my girlfriend?" At that, she throws her arms around, knocking me over in the process. I gaze deeply into her eyes. "You're so beautiful Moana." She blushes and hides her face in the crook of my neck.

We stay like that for awhile until Moana fall asleep on my shoulder. I smile to myself as I pick her up, carry her bridal style back to her hut, gently place her into her bed, cover her up, and kiss her on the forehead. "Goodnight Princess. Sleep well." I get up to leave, but the sight of Moana sleeping is too adorable for me not to look at so I quietly climb into her bed and lie down beside her. I watch her chest rise and fall, her eyes flutter about, and how she smiles a lot in her sleep. Eventually, I end up falling asleep myself, smiling just as much as Moana is in her sleep.
