You Gave Up... (Part 1)
One Shot #8
Moana's POV
It's been three months since Maui and I broke up. I've missed him every since, though he hasn't been by visit. He knows how much he broke my heart so he's been keeping his distance. Despite that, I know he'll return again. I don't know exactly when, but I know he will. He's Maui. Making random appearances without any explanation is what he does best. Well that and breaking the hearts of girls everywhere, including mine.
I feel in love with Maui about a year and a half ago, not too long after we got back from restoring the heart of Te Fiti. I was 16 then, but I'm almost 18 now. We were together for almost two years and then suddenly things fell apart. Maui became cold and distant, slowly but surely reverting back to his old ways. He also began to act strangely at times, as if he had some secret business to take care of that he didn't want me to know about. Boy let me tell you when I see him again, he's in for a mouth full from me.
Time skip... Two months later...
I'm helping some of the village fisherman catch some fish to take my mind off Maui for a little while. He always comes back into my mind, but I try to keep myself busy to keep the sadness at bay as much as I can. I'm about to pull up my second haul when the eldest fisherman taps me on the shoulder. "I don't mean to bother you Moana, but I think I see Maui in the distance." I stand up straight. "You're kidding?" He shakes his head no and points up to the sky. I look up and he's indeed right. I see a familiar giant hawk flying in our direction. My heart races and my arms and legs begin to shake. I'm not ready to face him. I was hoping that I'd at least have some advanced warning of his return, but clearly I didn't get that courtesy.
The familiar hawk shifts back into his normal form as he lands a few feet away from me. My heart falls as I'm face to face with Maui. All of the heartbreak and painful memories come back to me all at once and I clutch my head from the rush of them. The fisherman can sense the intensity of this reunion so they move to another spot to give Maui and I some privacy to talk. When they're gone, Maui speaks up. "Moana...." I cross my arms over my chest. "Maui, what are you doing here?" "I'm here to apologize, for everything. I'm a jerk Moana. Always have been and probably always will be. Even though I came a long way because of you, the darkness within me is always going to win. I pushed you away before I could hurt you further, though from the looks of it, it didn't make a difference. I can tell I've pretty much destroyed everything between us and I'll live to regret that everyday until the end of the time."
"Maui.... you can't just show up five months later and expect all to be forgiven. You left me wondering for FIVE MONTHS. You left without saying goodbye. I love you so much. Even though we broke up, I still love you and as much as I want you back, I can't bear to have my heartbroken like that again." He looks at me with equal sadness as I'm looking at him. "I know Moana. It's time for me to be completely honest with you. If you'll take the time to listen, I'll tell you what my secret business was and why I had to leave." I sigh and sit down on the dock, patting the spot next to me, though I move over a couple inches so I'm not right on top of him.
"I left that night in the middle of the night. It was about two in the morning. You were exhausted and I didn't want to wake you so I crept out quietly. I kissed you on the forehead and lips before I left. I had some business to take care of Tamatoa. He's been reeking extreme havoc in the realm of monsters. He even temporarily turned Te Fiti back into Te Ka. In addition, he threatened to come after you, but I stopped him from going through with that plan." I look at Maui in shock as he tells me everything. "How'd you stop him?" "Well he agreed that he'd leave you alone if I gave him something significant in return." "What'd you give him Maui?" He gives me a pained smile. "Why my immortality of course." "You're joking." He then becomes serious and I realize he's not. "Maui, your powers and immortality are what make you the amazing demigod of the wind and sea. They're an important part of who you are. I can't believe you gave that up."
"I still my have powers and my fish hook so I can still protect people and pull up islands and what not, it's just I won't live forever anymore. I did it for you Moana. You're so much more important to me than immortality. I want to fix everything. I want you to trust me again. I'll work to gain your trust back everyday, even if it takes me years. I love you Moana and I won't lose you a second time." I sit in silence and absorb his words before I can form a response. "I want to give us another try, but like you said, it's going to take some time to get back to where we were, but this time around, no more lies, and certainly no more secrets. If you can promise me that, then I'll consider trying again." He moves a tad closer to me, still keeping a slight distance. "I promise you that there will be no more lies and no more secrets. If I have to go somewhere and take care of business, I will be sure to tell you. All I want is a life with you. I want to be in a real relationship with you like we had before and one day, when the time is right, I want to marry you."
I crack a small smile. "I'd like that Maui, I'd like that a lot." He gives me a small smile back. "Me too Moana. In fact, no scratch that, I'd love that. Anyways, I saw you were helping the fisherman with catching some fish. Do they need any help? I could help them out." "That's really nice of you to offer to help them. I think they'd appreciate the help. I'm going to head back to my place and get a bite to eat because I'm starving, but we'll talk more later. Does that sound good?" "That sounds good." He takes a step forward as if he's going to hug me, but then second guesses it and takes a step. Instead, he extends a hand in which I shake. I try not to take it personally. After all, I'm the one who suggested taking baby steps.
Hoped that you guys liked this part of this one shot! By the way, I got slight inspiration for this one shot based one of my favorite CaptainSwan moments in Once Upon A Time. The scene is the video attached above in case you want to watch it and have it help set the mood of this one shot. :) -Mary
