Harvard Soccer (Part 1)
One Shot #36
Moana's POV
So my freshman year of college starts in two weeks but soccer tryouts are today. I'm excited but mainly terrified. College soccer is very different from high school soccer. In high school, they go easy on you, but in college, it's like may the odds be ever in your favor, hope you survive it and make your college look good. I really hope I do Harvard proud. It's one of the most prestigious, if not the most prestigious university in the country. If I were to flop my tryouts, I'd be a joke automatically. I pray silently and take a deep breath before entering the soccer field. Lord, give me the strength to conquer these tryouts.
As I enter, I see sixty girls lined up on the field, all of whom are prettier, taller, and skinnier than me. I grab the fat on my stomach and frown slightly. Just as it couldn't get any worse, the coach appears and he's this 6'5 menacing looking man loaded with tattoos. His muscles are so huge. He looks like he could be the Hulk in the next Avengers movie for sure. He paces the line back and forth, studying everything from our faces to our bodies as a whole. He jots down a few notes before speaking at all. "Hello girls." I roll my eyes at how formal he is. He notices and glares at me, pulling me by my sleeve. "What's the matter girl?" I make a sound of annoyance. "Nothing's wrong. I just think your formality is rather silly." The coach pulls me closer and I can feel his hot breath on the back of my neck. Though as I stare into his eyes, I'm entranced. He's actually really attractive the longer I look at him.
"I'll let your snide remark slide, this one time. If you say and or do anything else to piss me off, you're done." I don't say anything and take my place back in line, tuning out the girls who are laughing at me. He continues to eye me while rambling on. "Anyways, I'm coach Maui and I'll we watching the tryouts today and making the call of who stays and who goes. There are sixty one of you trying out and only twenty of you will actually make the time. If those odds scare you, I suggest you leave now. If not, welcome to the battle grounds of Harvard Soccer. Good luck and I'll be watching." He blows the whistle and we begin a series of group drills, strategy plans, etc before showing our individual skills. I can feel my nerves building up as some of the girls get tapped on the shoulder, indicating that Maui's seen enough and they didn't make the cut.
Though surprisingly, Maui hasn't tapped my shoulder yet. I may have a chance here to make the time. There are now only forty of us left so it's a fifty fifty chance.
An hour later...
Twenty one other girls got tapped on the shoulder and sulked their way off of the soccer field. I never got tapped on the shoulder. I'm honestly so shocked. Maui looked at me at such disgust earlier but apparently he thinks my soccer skills are decent enough to have me on the team. All of the sudden, Maui is hovering behind me, his voice booming through the field. "Well congratulations to those of you still standing on this sacred field. You've made the team. Practice starts next week. Be ready to bring your A-game." I'm about to leave when Maui pulls me back. "You're Moana, right?" I nod. "You sure have a mouth on you, but your skills impress me. Out of all of the girls out there, you were hands down the best. Nice job." I'm stunned. I wasn't expecting him to say something so nice to me. "T-thank you Coach. I'll see you next week." He nods and I leave the field with Maui's words replaying in my mind, causing a smile to tug itself onto my face.
Hoped that you guys liked this part of this one shot! It was a reader suggested one. <3 In addition, I've decided that for the next few days, I'll update depending on how I feel. Like I may update twice, once, or not at all depending on the day. This will be my only update today because I don't have the energy to write anymore. I spent all afternoon at the doctor's office, having multiple tests ran on me that give me very little answers. Though, I had to skip work and got a medical note in case I need some time off next week. I have to schedule some additional tests as well. It's frustrating not knowing what's wrong, but what they did tell me is that what I'm dealing with is abnormal and something needs to be fixed. -Mary
