A Broken Man (Part 12)

One Shot #27 (Cont.)

Moana's POV

Maui and I continue talking well into the evening. We've been talking so much that I've only just realized it's already eight o'clock. I'll leave soon. I want to talk to Maui a little bit more. "So Moana, how much schooling do you have left before you graduate?" "Well since it's March now, I only have three more months to go. I know it's not that long, but it feels like an eternity. I can't wait to get out of that prison."  Maui laughs. "That's how I used to refer to high school myself. People make out like high school is this amazing experience when in reality it's crap." I giggle. "No kidding."

"Where you thinking of going to college or trying to break out into the industry afterwards?" I frown. "I want to break out into the music industry, but that's never going to happen for me." Maui furrows his eyebrows. "How come?" I sigh. "Well not only do I not have the money and resources, but I'm not exactly great looking or talented." Maui makes a strange sound. I raise an eyebrow. "Are you mocking me?" His eyes bug out of his head. "No not at all. In fact, I was going to tell you that you're pretty and I don't believe that you're not talented for a second." I blush at his compliment. "Thank you Maui." "You're welcome. What lane would you want to go down the most, singing or writing?" "Music more, but both would be cool."

Maui smiles. "I demand you to sing me a song this instead. No if, ands, or buts about it. I need to hear that voice of yours." The blush on my face deepens. He's really putting me on the spot right now. "Fine. I'll do one song and one song only. Any preferences?" "Do one that really speaks to you." I go through my phone and pull up the karaoke track for Burn from Hamilton. In case you didn't know, Burn is my favorite song from my favorite musical. I take a deep breath, close my eyes, and start singing.

I saved every letter you wrote me
From the moment I read them
I knew you were mine
You said you were mine
I thought were mine

Do you know what Angelica said
When we saw your first letter arrive?
She said: "Be careful with that one, love
he will do what it takes to survive."

You and your words flooded my senses
Your sentences left me defenseless
You built me palaces out of paragraphs
You built cathedrals

I'm re-reading the letters you wrote me
I'm searching and scanning for answers
In every line
For some kind of sign
And when you were mine
The world seemed to burn
Burn

You published the letters she wrote you
You told the whole world how you brought this girl
Into our bed
In clearing your name
You have ruined our lives

Do you know what Angelica said
When she read what you'd done?
She said: "You have married an Icarus.
He has flown too close to the sun."

You and your words obsessed with your legacy
Your sentences border on senseless
And you are paranoid in every paragraph
How they perceive you-
You, you, you

I'm erasing myself from the narrative
Let future historians wonder
How Eliza reacted
When you broke her heart
You have torn it all apart
I'm watching it burn
Watching it burn

The world has no right to my heart
The world has no place in our bed
They don't get to know what I said
I'm burning the memories
Burning the letters
that might have redeemed you

You forfeit all rights to my heart
You forfeit the place in our bed
You'll sleep in your office instead
With only the memories
of when you were mine

I hope that you burn

As I finish, Maui stares at me in awe, which causes me to look away for a moment.  "You're absolutely incredible Moana. Seriously, your vocal chops are out of this world. As soon as you graduate, I'm helping you get a music career." I smile and do something that catches both Maui and I by surprise, which happens to be hugging him. Maui doesn't try shaking me off. I stay like for a few minutes before pulling away from him. "That'd really be amazing Maui, but I can't ask you to do that for me." He smiles. "You didn't ask me, I offered. Anyways, you get going. I know you have school in the morning. I'll see you tomorrow evening." I nod sheepishly. "See ya Maui." Maui gives me a playful salute. "See ya Moana." I leave the hospital with the first real smile on my face in years. It might sound weird, but this job and spending time with Maui is actually making me really happy.
