How To Save A Life (Part 1)
One Shot #37
Maui's POV
I'm sitting in my car in the Hollywood hills reflecting on the recent shitty events of my life. I blew my biggest audition yet as an actor, got dumped by my long term girlfriend Sally, and had a major fight with my parents all in the same week. All of which has amounted me seeing just how little worth I have in this world. On top of all that, I lost all of my friends when I moved out here two years ago. Very few people here are actually sincere and care about the well being of others. While the view is spectacular up here, I can't bear to look at it much longer. In fact, I don't want to live anymore. I'm so tired of being alone and sucking at everything I do. The world would be so much better off without me in it.
Without giving it a second thought, I start up my car engine and drive forward. I slowly but surely get to the edge of the cliff. Both fear and relief swell within me as I start to tip over. I'm two inches from doing so when suddenly a girl comes running towards me, waving her arms frantically in the air. I give her a weird look but go back to what I'm doing. She gasps and runs to the front of the car, pushing it back with as much strength as possible. Surprisingly, she manages to get the car away from the edge of the cliff. Damn that girl is strong. Like seriously, she must have secret superpowers or something. Although I'm impressed, I'm also pissed. I was so close to ending it all. Why in the hell didn't she just let me?
I get out of my car and give her a death glare. "Why the hell did you do that? I was so close in my goal. I just wanted to end it all." The girl's face is a mixture of anger, despair, and anxiety. "I-I was only trying to help. I-I'm sorry." I throw my hands up in the air in mockery. "Y-you're sorry? Don't be. I'm sure you life is just perfect." She frowns at me but keeps her cool. "I'll let that slide since you're clearly under a lot of stress, but just know that my life is far from perfect." The girl then comes closer to me and motions for me to sit down next to her. I hesitate but find myself doing so. The girl eyes me. "What's your name?" I grunt "Maui." She gives me a small smile. "I'm Moana. I wish we were meeting under different circumstances." I give her a nod.
"Maui... why were trying to drive off of that cliff over there?" I look down at the ground in shame. "I-I really don't want to burden you with my issues. You're an innocent bystander who just happened to see the lowest moment of my life. For that, I'm truly sorry." Moana touches my arm gently. "It's okay. I'm not judging you at all. Though I am happy I was able to stop you. My heart would have broke if you had driven over that cliff completely." A bunch of people by a nearby tree and gawk at us. "Do you mind if we talk somewhere more private? I know a place to drive to. That is if you trust me enough to go with me... I don't blame you if you don't." Moana surprises me by saying "Sure, but do you mind if I drive? You're not exactly in a great mental state right now." I scratch my head nervously. "Yeah you're probably right." I hand her my keys to unlock the car. We then get in and head to the private place I'm feeding her directions to, which is a secret pond that very few people know about. It's hidden further up in the Hollywood hills heading towards Malibu.
