A good way to tell how your relationship with God is going is to look at the state of your soul. I mean love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control, the fruits of the spirit. Jesus said, "Remain in me and you will bear fruit." So the how much fruit of the spirit you have in your life should be a good measure meant for where you are in your relationship with God. How much joy do you have in your heart? How much self control do you have over yourself? Fruits of the spirit come from your relationship with God, no where else. God is the only one who can give you those things and He gives them to all who follow Him.
Your relationship with God should change your life. If it isn't then you probably aren't changing the way you live your life. Believing in God isn't enough, you have to live like God tells you to live. Then your life will start being transformed. Maybe you situation won't change but the way you look at things will. Everything won't all of a sudden be easy, things will actually get harder but you will be living a much better life in God.
