17 Weeks Later
"I'm proud to introduce you all to the newest members of the NYPD and the newest graduates of the Academy." Our commanding officer smiled, as he spoke at the podium. He stepped back as we all stood proudly and looked out over our family members and a few Captains from different units looking over us all and inspecting us even if we hadn't started to work yet.
We waited for a long moment before we were finally able to leave where we stood. I grabbed Elliot's hand and squeezed it as we quickly jumped down from the stage, even if I was wearing heels, and we headed towards our family.
"There you two are! You didn't take the stairs did you?" Bernie asked, as she grabbed Elliot and hugged him warmly.
"Nope, my wife pulled me off the edge," Elliot smirked.
I stood back and watched as all of Elliot's family congratulated him. My own father didn't even come, but he was back in the hospital because he had an infection. So no one from my side of the family was really here and I could feel it right now. I could feel how that no matter how close I am to Elliot's family, they aren't the same as my family.
So as Elliot continued to talk to all of his siblings and parents, I walked away and towards the dorms. I walked in and went into the room I've been staying in. I sat down on the bed and pulled my phone out and dialed my father's hospital phone.
I waited for several long moments before he answered.
"Hello?" He questioned.
"Hey, Dad. It's Liv." I spoke quietly.
"Did you do it?" He asked, and I smiled.
"Yeah, I'm officially going to be an officer."
"I don't hear everyone else. Where are you?" He questioned, and I frowned.
"I'm not near them. I want to be in a quiet spot for when I called you. How are you feeling?"
"I'm out of commission for good, kid."
"What?" I replied quickly.
"I tried to talk to my boss and see if I could go back to being a commanding officer. He said that I had to be healthy for one full year, and now I'm in the hospital with oxygen nubbins in my nose and a constant stream of IV antibiotics going into my body. I can't be a CO ever again."
"I'm so sorry." I frowned.
"No one came to watch you graduate, huh?" He asked, and I felt tears well in my eyes.
"I know that you would've if you could've. But I really fucked myself over by completely pushing Serena and Cynthia away. I'm so stupid sometimes, you know? Like I'm a complete dummy."
"You aren't dumb, Olivia. You were standing up for yourself and for me when I couldn't."
"I should go see if Elliot is ready to go home. I'm going to change and then I'll be up to see you. Okay?" I questioned as a few tears ran down my cheeks.
"Yeah, I told the nurses that I wanted to see you today but you might be late. But you're family, you have an excuse."
"Alright, I love you Dad." I breathed before we hung up.
[*]
Elliot asked me before we were getting ready to leave if he wanted to join him and his family for dinner. He was kind of acting like I wasn't even his wife. I told him that I wanted to go home and then head up to see my father, and he didn't mind at all.
I went home and showered before getting back into my graduation uniform. I knew my father would want to see me in it, so I decided to wear it since I don't know if anyone took pictures of me.
"My kid is wearing heels. What did you do to my tomboy?" My father asked, as I smoothed my skirt and entered his room.
"I'm going home and getting into sweats soon. Trust me." I smiled softly. He laughed a bit as he reached out to me. I grabbed his hand as I sat next to him, and I kissed his hand gently. It was cold, and I now know that his circulation must be off also.
"Your fingers are almost blue..." I trailed off, and he frowned.
"Yeah."
"Dad, did they notice? Cause if not I'm going to tell them. This isn't good." I spoke, as I stood.
"They know, Liv." He breathed. I sat back down and looked at him.
"How bad is this infection?" I mused, and he frowned.
"I'm rejecting my liver, Livvie."
"Oh my god," I spoke quickly, as I felt my body start to shake.
"Hey, don't cry." He spoke, as he saw my eyes grow watery.
"How can't I cry!? You are dying again, Dad! I just got you back!" I cried, as I stood and started to pace.
"I'll get another liver, kid. They are looking nonstop."
"But aren't people ahead of you?"
"Yeah, but if I continue to get sicker I'll jump up some spots. I'll get another liver."
"Dad." I sobbed as I leaned against the wall. He watched me for a long moment.
"Don't think about that."
"How can't I think about your death? I lost Mom, and Cynthia and Serena were pushed away, and I can't lose you. Dad, no one from Elliot's family was happy when they saw me tonight. It really proved to me that I'm just Elliot's wife..."
"Don't." He huffed.
"What?" I replied tearfully.
"Don't make me feel guilty."
"I'm not trying too! I'm just scared and upset. I'm going to talk to your doctor." I spoke, before quickly walking towards him. I kissed his forehead before leaving the room.
[*]
"I may be a bit buzzed." Elliot smiled, as he walked into the kitchen that night. I didn't even look at him. I was too busy trying to find articles about people rejecting livers and being able to accept one and keep it and live. But there weren't that many. And my dad is older.
"Did you eat?" Elliot asked as he sat his take-home container down in front of me.
"No."
"Why not? It's nearly 10."
"Because."
"What's wrong?" He sighed as he sat next to me. He opened up the take-home container and started to eat what he couldn't finish at the restaurant.
"Because."
"Oh my lord. Tell me what's wrong!" He exclaimed. He wasn't angry, just a bit irritated.
"My Dad is rejecting his liver. And I miss my Mom. I even miss Cynthia and Serena."
"Liv-"
"I want to catch a break. I don't want my father to die. I want a family again."
"You have one! You are apart of mine." He smiled.
"I'm going up to the hospital to sleep. Take some medicine before you go to bed." I spoke, before kissing him quickly and leaving the kitchen.
