"Niall, you ready?" Kristyn called upstairs to her husband. "No," he mumbled as he walked down the stairs unhappily. "Oh, cheer up, it's just one more tightening," Kristyn said as she kissed her unamused husband. "I'm just ready to have these stupid things off," Niall grumbled as they went to the car for his last braces tightening appointment.
After arriving at the orthodontist, Kristyn signed Niall in, and he sat nervously. His leg bounced up and down as he sat there, and Kristyn laid a hand on his knee to try and comfort his nerves a little. He wound up grabbing her hand and she ran her thumb over the back of his shaking hand as they sat there. "Niall?" a ditzy assistant said as she opened the door. Kristyn and Niall stood up, and went to the dental room she directed them too. "Hey guys," Dr. Todd said walking in and checking up on Niall's files. "Hey," they greeted, Niall not sounding chipper at all. "Okay, we will start with a couple of x-rays just to make everything is shifting correctly, and it all looks good!" Dr. Todd said getting the little bits for Niall to bite onto. Niall sat still as the x-rays were taken, and Dr. Todd started to review them. "Ah," Dr. Todd said as he laid a finger on his chin in thought. "What?" Niall asked getting more nervous at what he had seen. "Well, it looks like we will have to do a little more work today. Your wisdom teeth are coming in, so we will need to remove those. It also looks as if you have two cavities that will need to be filled as well," Dr. Todd said nonchalantly as he sat the papers down on the counter top. Kristyn saw Niall physically tense up. All Niall could hear was ringing in his ears after the news was broke, and he couldn't help but start crying. Niall was beyond frustrated, because he was only supposed to come for a tightening, but not only that- Niall HATES needles. "It's okay, babe," Kristyn said immediately springing into action as she moved to Niall's side. At this point, the tears were cascading down his face, and he was starting to lose his breath. "Shh, it's alright. Calm down, babe," she said trying her hardest to get his attention. It was like Niall could hear everything she was saying, but couldn't physically will himself to calm down. Dr. Todd saw the commotion, and gave Niall some laughing gas in an attempt to help calm him down. "Here, Niall, let's try this. Just try and breathe," he said slipping the oxygen mask over Niall's nose. "I'm right here, babe," Kristyn said wiping the tears off his face, but as soon as she got them off, more came running down his face. Niall's body was shaking with sobs, and Kristyn felt terrible. "Breathe, babe. Slow," she said trying to get the oxygen to take affect, but it didn't help as much as they had hoped. "Ready, bud?" Dr. Todd said getting the needles ready to numb him. Niall shook his head, and the cries intensified once again. Kristyn played with his fringe of hair, something that normally always calmed him down. "Hey, hey, just focus on me," she said. He was staring at the shot that looked massive in his eyes, but in reality wasn't that big. "Look at me," she said gently moving his face to look at her. "You're okay. Relax. Shut your eyes," she said trying her best to do everything in her power to comfort him. At this point, he had a death grip on one of her hands, and her other hand was still playing with his hair. "Alright, Niall. Open wide for me," the orthodontist said, and Niall shut his eyes while tears still leaked out uncontrollably. Kristyn still hadn't been successful in getting Niall calmed down. He sobbed all the way through the numbing, which took 20 shots to get him fully numbed. "That's it, bud," the orthodontist said as he finished the last needle. "Take a deep breath, you're okay," Kristyn said softly as the orthodontist gave Niall a chance to catch his breath.
Dr. Todd strategically worked on getting the cavities filled as quickly as possible. In the meantime, Kristyn was still giving Niall comforting and encouraging words. She never left his side, and his grip never loosened, and his hard cries never subsided. "Alright, bud. That's all done. Time for the wisdom teeth. You're doing great!" Dr. Todd encouraged as he went on with the next procedure. He worked diligently to get them out in a timely manner, and then sighed in relief when the hardest parts were done. "Let's try something else," Dr. Todd said to Kristyn with an idea on how to try and calm Niall down. "Okay, Niall. We are almost done," Dr. Todd said getting the next set of things they needed. "You're so close, Ni. Hang in there," Kristyn said trying to get some of the feeling back in her numb hand. She swapped hands with Niall, and moved the other one to rest on his leg. "Okay, Niall. I'm going to just take your old bands off and your wire off," Dr. Todd said starting to tell Niall everything he was doing to try and help ease his nerves. "Now, I'm going to put your new wire on," he said pulling the tightest wire they had over Niall's brackets. "Good! I know that's a little uncomfortable. Alright, now I'm going to put a power chain on, so your teeth are all pulled together nicely," he said and maneuvered the power chain onto Niall's braces. He then put gauze in the back of Niall's mouth to stop the bleeding, and leaned his chair up. "All done, Niall!" Dr. Todd said, but Niall was still full on crying. "Ready to go?" Kristyn said helping Niall steady himself as he got up, and he nodded. Kristyn helped him out to the car. "I'm so sorry, babe," she said and held his hand the whole drive home as he rested his head on the door. She helped him up to their bedroom, and pulled him close to cuddle with her. She could still feel his tears coming down, and his body was still shaking. "It's over now, you're okay," she said and shushed him into a sleep.
A few hours later, the two of the woke up, and Niall was in a lot of pain. "Hurting?" she asked as he furrowed his eyebrows in pain. He nodded, and Kristyn hopped up to get him the pain meds the orthodontist had prescribed and some ibuprofen. "Thanks, babe," he muttered out barely opening his mouth. Kristyn pondered what she could make him for dinner that was soft, so it wouldn't hurt his mouth. She decided on soup, and she took it to him after it had cooled. "You're the best," he said eating it slowly. Kristyn took care of Niall for the rest of the week, and it was finally time for him to get his stitches taken out the next week.
Niall sat in the dental chair all over again as Dr. Todd removed his stitches. He was a lot calmer knowing no needles were involved, and held Kristyn's hand as he took them out. "Alright! Everything looks great! You'll have your braces for two more weeks, and then you'll be done with them!" Dr. Todd said and Niall grinned from ear to ear. "Really?! That's great!" he said cheerfully. The two weeks went by quickly, and when they went to get them removed, Niall couldn't stop smiling. "They look great, babe!" Kristyn said as he inspected them in the mirror. "Thank you, babe!" he smiled back loving his new teeth.
