After waiting about a months time to see if the retainer was working to stop the shifting of Liam's teeth and if they would straighten up, they went back to see the orthodontist. Liam sat in the dental chair as he waited anxiously for the orthodontist to come in and check. "Calm down, Li," Niall said as Liam's foot shook back and forth. "I'm sorry. I'm just really nervous about the news," Liam said, and then the orthodontist walked in. "Hey guys! Nice to see you all again!" he said grabbing some gloves. "Hey!" the boys said to him. "So, tell me how you feel about wearing the retainer. Do you think it's helped any?" the orthodontist asked as he turned the overhead light on. "I've hated wearing it, but I'm not really sure if it's helped or not," Liam admitted. "Okay! If you haven't seen any major shifting, then it could be doing its job. Have you been wearing it like you're supposed to?" the orthodontist asked while getting his stuff out. "I have. The only time I take it out is to eat and brush my teeth," Liam said as the orthodontist walked over. "Great! I'm going to start off with just a few x-rays," the orthodontist said, and Liam opened for him to put the bits in that you bite down on. The orthodontist took a few x-rays, and then he leaned Liam back in the chair. Harry saw Liam eyeballing the orthodontist nervously as he looked over the x-rays, and Harry snapped at him to get his attention. He took a big deep breath for Liam to take, and Liam did as he was told. Louis gave him a reassuring nod, and Zayn gave him a thumbs up. "Okay, so it does look like there was some shifting, and I don't think that it has straightened them back as much as I had hoped. I'm just going to take a quick look, and then we will decide what to do," the orthodontist said picking up the explorer and mirror, and Liam's heart started to pound a little at the news.
The orthodontist looked around for several minutes, and then he took the tools out of Liam's mouth. "Alright, so I believe the best option from now is going to be doing braces again," the orthodontist said, and Liam's heart dropped. "I know it's super annoying to have to do it again, but you won't have them near as long this time, because there isn't that much work to be done; however, you will need to wear your retainer like instructed when they come off this time to prevent having to do this for a third time in the future," the orthodontist explained, and the boys looked up at him sadly. "I-uh...do we have to do it today? You're sure there isn't another option?" Liam asked wiping his sweating hands on his jeans. "No, I'm afraid there's not another option. We can wait if you want, but it would be better if we did it today. If not, your teeth are just going to shift more, and you'll have to have them on a lot longer," the orthodontist explained, and Niall interjected. "Li, go ahead and get it done," Niall said and Liam looked at him. "Niall's right, it's better if you do," Louis agreed, and Liam nodded slowly. "Okay, I'll be right back with the tools!" the orthodontist said leaving the room after sitting Liam's chair up.
"Boys, I don't want to do this all over again!" Liam said as tears started running down his face, and all of the boys moved over to comfort him quickly. "It was so horrible the first time, I can't do it again," Liam said, and Zayn pulled him into a hug. "Shh, Li. It's okay," Zayn said, and he rocked of them back and forth to calm Liam down. "I hate this so much!" Liam said as Harry rubbed his back. "Liam, we are so sorry you have to do this again," Louis said seeing Liam's hands shaking, and he took them into his hands. "It's literally the worst though! Niall knows, it stinks! It's uncomfortable, and they hurt for so long. They are a lot of work, and on top of that you have to go through even more pain once a month!" Liam said as his nervousness increased by the second. "Relax, Liam. It's alright! You heard him say they won't be on long, and it'll be worth it!" Niall said to a very distraught Liam. "Okay, we are ready to start!" the orthodontist walked in. "So, I know you had clear braces the first time, and I figured you would want them clear again?" the orthodontist asked and Liam nodded. "Awesome! Then we are ready!" he said leaning Liam's chair back again, and the orthodontist could see how nervous Liam looked. "Boys, if you want to pull your chairs around, you can be with Liam," the orthodontist smiled as he put his gear back on and started getting ready to put the braces on. "Okay! Thanks doc!" Zayn said, and all of the boys pulled the chairs around. Louis held Liam's hand, Niall rubbed Liam's leg, Zayn sat above his head out of the way, and Louis sat in between Harry and Zayn. "Alright, open for me," he directed, and then he slipped the cheek retractor into Liam's mouth. He put the braces on in a timely manor, and all of the boys kept giving him encouraging words. "You're doing great, Liam!" Niall said to him. "You are! They look so cool!" Harry added on. "We love you!" Louis said. "It's going to be worth it!" Zayn said as the orthodontist finished up.
"You're all done!" the orthodontist said as he leaned Liam up and handed him a mirror. Liam opened his mouth and inspected his second round of braces. "Well, I definitely like this better than the retainer. At least you can't really tell they are there. They look like the first time I got them," Liam said, and the boys nodded. "We can't even see them, but they look cool anyway," Harry said and the boys agreed. "Yep, they're almost invisible like the first time," Zayn agreed. "Well, that makes me feel better," Liam said as the orthodontist handed him his kit for his braces. "You know the drill. I don't expect you to have these too long. I'll see you in a month," he smiled, and the boys left the office. Liam was uncomfortable, but he was happy the boys were there to comfort him and knew it would be worth it in the end. "Thank you boys for being with me," Liam said in the car. "Absolutely, Liam! We love you!" the boys said, and Liam took them way more seriously that time.
