Niall and Kristyn were bored out of their minds. They had been in quarantine/ social distancing for almost a week now, and they were starting to go a little batty with nothing to do. Kristyn had brought over some stuff to stay at Niall's house in London, because she didn't know when they would be able to leave, and she's glad she did, because it looked like they were going to be there for quite a while. Niall sat on the couch as Kristyn looked through a magazine for the fourth time when something struck her. "Niall, the dentist appointments are tomorrow, and they haven't called to cancel," she said a little surprised. "Really? Let's check the messages on the phone," Niall said going through voice mails, and there wasn't one from the office. "Think we should call and ask?" Kristyn suggested and Niall nodded. "Better go ahead," Niall said tossing her the phone. Kristyn dialed the number, and waited for a receptionist to answer. Much to her surprise, a lady answered on the other side. "Hey! This is Kristyn calling about mine and Niall's 12:00pm appointments tomorrow, are those still scheduled?" Kristyn asked. "Yes ma'am, we are going to go ahead and do appointments scheduled through the next week, and then we are closing down until this virus is gone," the receptionist answered and Kristyn thanked her and hung up. "Looks like we are going," Kristyn said and Niall shuddered at the idea.
The next day, Kristyn and Niall got up and got ready for their appointments. "Come on, Ni," Kristyn called as she tossed him his car keys, and he ran down the stairs. "I'm coming," he said and they rushed out the door. They sat in the waiting room, and they were both a little nervous. Suddenly, a dark-haired assistant called them back. "Alright, y'all will be in the same room," she said pointing towards the room, and Niall and Kristyn situated themselves while they waited. Soon after, two hygienists came in the room and started cleaning their teeth and examining them. The dentist came in to assess them, and take a look at their x-rays. "Well, Kristyn it looks like you have six cavities, and I think you're going to need two root canals," Dr. Todd explained and Kristyn nodded. "Okay, Niall, let's take a look," Dr. Todd said moving across the room. "Well, it looks like you'll need four root canals, and your wisdom teeth pulled," Dr. Todd said after studying Niall's x-rays. "I say we go ahead and get everything done today, because I don't know when you'll be able to come back in, and these are procedures that need to be done fairly quickly just to avoid future problems," Dr. Todd told the two, and Kristyn said it sounded good. She waited for Niall's response, but she never heard one. When she looked over, he had tears streaming down his face, and he was shaking. "Baby, what's the matter?" Kristyn asked taken aback. "I don't want that stuff done!" he exclaimed through tears. "You have to get it done, babe. I promise, it'll be worth it," Kristyn said trying to reassure him. She went ahead and nodded at the dentist that they would do it. "Well, if you'll give me just a few minutes we will start on you both-" Dr. Todd started, but was cut off by Niall quickly. "Will you please do Kristyn first, I need her to be with me," Niall interjected. "Yes, we can do that," Dr. Todd said hoping watch Kristyn first would calm Niall down some. "Alright, I'll be right back," he said swiftly going to check on the other patients.
About 10 minutes later he came back, and they had set up to get everything done. "Okay, Kristyn, we will do four regular white cavity fillings, and then we will start those two root canals, alright?" Dr. Todd explained and she nodded putting in her headphones. Niall watched intently from the other side of the room, careful not to get too close. "Now if I'm not mistaken, you're a little harder to numb, correct?" he asked and Kristyn confirmed. Dr. Todd put needle after needle in, and eventually Kristyn was numbed after 20 shots. They powered through the first cavities without a hitch, but when he started drilling the other two cavities for the root canal, Kristyn started feeling the pain. "Ah, I can feel it," she said quickly. "Okay! We will give you some more numbing," Dr. Todd said getting another syringe. After a few more shots, he gets Kristyn numbed enough to finally finish all of her procedures. "Alright Mr. Horan," Dr. Todd said finishing up Kristyn, and moving over to him. Niall was certainly not ready.
Niall moved into the chair, but the fear washed over him once again. "Let's get to numbing," Dr. Todd said picking up the needle, and Niall looked at Kristyn for reassurance. She grabbed his hand, and smiled at him. As Dr. Todd had Niall open his mouth, he couldn't get Niall numbed either. Niall had tears streaming down his face, and he was beginning to get worked up at the amount of shots he was having to get. "It's okay, Niall," Kristyn said trying to get his attention on her, and off of what was going on. "You're doing great, bud," Dr. Todd said trying to help Kristyn. "You're so brave," the assistant said as they were going. "Are you starting to feel numb?" Dr. Todd asked and finally Niall nodded. "30 shots, you've beat Kristyn, Niall," the dentist said trying to make Niall laugh. Niall didn't respond well at all though, the tears just kept pouring down his face. "I'm right here, baby," Kristyn said sitting as close as she could, and started rubbing his leg. She could feel him shaking under her touch. Dr. Todd and the assistant worked as quickly as they could, and got through two root canals fairly easy, but then Niall grabbed the dentist's wrist, and he realized that his numbing was wearing off. "I'm sorry, bud! Let me numb you some more," Dr. Todd said earning even more tears from Niall. "Relax, Ni. You're doing so good," Kristyn said brushing his hair off his forehead. She positioned herself where she was closer, and had one hand in his hand, and had another hand playing with his hair. Dr. Todd numbed Niall four more times to get him through the last two root canals with no pain. Niall squeezed Kristyn's hand, and she held his back tightly. "Good job, Niall," Dr. Todd would say every now and then, and he finally finished the root canals. "I think we are going to be better suited to do his wisdom teeth removal awake," Dr. Todd said checking Niall's white fillings, and then he slid over to the cabinet to get another needle and a stronger numbing agent. "Okay, Niall. We are in the home stretch, bud," the dentist said giving him a second to recuperate from his previous procedures. Niall's tears never stopped, and at his point Kristyn was doing anything she could to get her fiancé to calm down. "Deep breaths, Niall," Kristyn said and kept playing with his hair, and rubbing her thumb over his hand. Niall tried his hardest, but he couldn't stop his panic.
The dentist had Niall open and numbed him four more times to get the wisdom teeth out painlessly. "Alright, let's get this started," Dr. Todd said, and they powered through as quickly as possible. They worked diligently to get them removed, and keep Niall as calm as humanly possible. "One more tooth," the dentist said and pulled it out quickly. Niall was relieved when they took all the tools and hands out of his mouth, he was at his wits end. He was more than happy to leave the office. "You did so good," Kristyn said and grabbed his hand as they walked out to his car. He was sniffling and wiping his still running nose, but his cries had finally subsided. Kristyn drove them back to Niall's house, and helped him get comfortable on the couch. She situated him with some ice packs, and gave him some medicine to help with the pain. "Thank you for staying and comforting me, and for taking care of me," Niall finally spoke up. "I don't mind, Niall! I love you," Kristyn said smiling at him, and he smiled back. "I love you too," Niall said reached for Kristyn, and she laid with him, and they cuddled and she took care of him for the remainder of the week. It made social isolation a lot easier to handle!
