Niall had been dreading his orthodontist appointment for several days. He had been having quite a bit of mouth pain, so when it got unbearable, Liam forced him to go to the dentist (who was also their orthodontist), and get everything checked. Unfortunately, he was told he was going to need a root canal, six teeth pulled, and since Niall was coming a few weeks later to get his braces on anyway, they went ahead and moved that up too for the same day. Niall had forgotten all about the appointment until he walked downstairs a couple of days before it was scheduled, and saw "Niall's appointments," written on the calendar, circled in red. The words made Niall shudder in fear at the thought, and for the next few days after that, he was a nervous wreck.
"Ready, Ni?" Liam called up the stairs to his boyfriend. After a long pause, Liam looked down at the clock and sighed. "Ni, we are going to be late, where are you?" he said a little more urgently as he walked up the stairs in search for the Irish boy. "There you are," Liam said as he saw Niall brushing his teeth. "Yep," Niall said after spitting and rinsing his mouth out. "We need to go, we are going to be late," Liam said coming behind Niall and wrapping him in a hug. "I know," Niall said anxiously. "I promise everything will be fine, I'll be right there with you the whole time," Liam said trying to comfort his nervous boyfriend. "Thanks, Li," Niall said with a soft smile before walking out to the car with his lover, and heading to his appointment. After they arrived at the office, Niall surprisingly got out of the car pretty easily, but Liam knew it wasn't going to be so easy to get Niall to cooperate when the procedures actually started. They got Niall signed in, and then he sat nervously bouncing his leg in a waiting room chair when his name was called. "Niall?" a dental assistant said opening the door. Liam stood to follow the lady back, and noticed that Niall sat glued to his chair. "Come on, babe," Liam smiled and sent a hand down for his boyfriend to grab. Niall looked at Liam for a minute, and then finally took his hand and pulled himself up. "You'll be in the room on the right," the dental assistant smiled as she left them to go in. "Here we are," Liam said as they went into the room. "I don't want to do this, Liam," Niall said looking at all of the scary tools that were laid out. "It's alright, love. I'll be with you the whole time," Liam smiled making Niall feel a little bit better.
Niall was starting to get settled, and laughing at all of the jokes Liam was making to get his mind off of it, when the dentist walked in. "Hi boys!" he said as he walked in, and sat down on the stool next to the dental chair Niall was in. "Hi!" Liam said with a smile. "Hey," Niall said a little more quiet than he normally would've. "Alright, so just to recap. We are doing a root canal, removing six teeth, and putting your braces on," Dr. Craig said as he looked over Niall's paperwork. Niall gulped when he was reminded of all the things that had to be done. "So, I'm going to start with the root canal, then I'll remove the six teeth, and we will put the braces on last," Dr. Craig said putting the bib around Niall's neck, and leaning the chair back. Niall reached for Liam, so Liam was quick to move over to the other chair close to Niall, and grabbed his hand. "You're alright," Liam said running his thumb over Niall's hand. "Okay, we will just get started with isolating the tooth, and then we will start the numbing process," Dr. Craig said as he got the rubber piece to stick over Niall's tooth. Liam could feel Niall's hand start shaking, and he grabbed Niall's other hand to keep him from trying to stop Dr. Craig. Niall was staring at the needles on the tray, and he was shaking like a leaf. "Focus on me, love," Liam told his boyfriend, and he couldn't get his attention drawn to Liam. "Babe," Liam said turning Niall's face toward him gently. "Don't look at those, look at me," Liam told him, and Niall directed his attention to his boyfriend. "Okay, time to numb," Dr. Craig said picking up the syringe, but Niall began to panic immediately. "Shh, calm down, Ni. I'm right here. It's just a small pinch, and then it's all over. Look at me, baby," Liam said but Niall wasn't having it. Niall couldn't exactly close his mouth due to the tools in it, but he was quick to turn his head away from the needle, and tears started coming down his face immediately. "Hey, shh. It's okay, it's okay. Listen to me, focus on my voice," Liam said as Niall panicked. "Take a deep breath," Liam said getting Niall to look at him. "Come on, take one with me," Liam said and Niall mimicked his deep breath. "Good," Liam said. "Just close your eyes and relax, baby. I've got you," Liam said and Niall finally trusted Liam some. Tears continued to stream down Niall's face as the needle was administered, and Liam held his hands tight. "Great! We will get started then," Dr. Craig said as he did the root canal.
"Great, now, I'll just numb you a little more so we can remove those six teeth," Dr. Craig said. Niall went from a somewhat calm state to right back into a state of pure terror. "Babe, you made it through that other shot great! These will be a piece of cake. Do what I said before and just close your eyes, and focus on me," Liam said at his fear-stricken boyfriend. "Okay, here we go," Dr. Craig said going to numb him some more. "Take another breath, babe," Liam said and got Niall through the next round of shots. Liam could tell Niall was still on edge as his teeth were pulled, and Liam used one hand to hold Niall's, and run a thumb over his hand. And used his other hand to play with Niall's hair, something that always calmed him. "You're doing great, Ni," Liam smiled as the last tooth was removed. "Great job, Niall! Time for your braces, and then you will be good to go," Dr. Craig said. He got to applying the brackets and wire quickly, and then sat Niall up in the chair. "You're all done!" Dr. Craig said to the boy who was still shaking. "Thanks doc," Liam said as he helped Niall up, and Dr. Craig gave him some care instructions, and showed Niall how to clean his braces and all. "Your braces look good, Niall!" Liam said as he drove them back home. "Thanks," Niall said with his head against the door. His mouth was completely numb, but he was happy to have left the office, and was so appreciative of Liam taking care of him and comforting him.
