The others on the boat were terrified. Silvio and Anna didn't know Mia well, but Zoe had turned very pale. Anna took her in her arms and Silvio sat down in front of her. "They'll find her, she can't be gone." he said and Zoe nodded. Her gaze was fixed on the rock wall where the cave entered.
Mia had lost her bearings in the dark. She had seen lights flashing in between, but then they had disappeared behind rocks. She was a little afraid to swim against somewhere in the dark. Again and again she tried to switch on her lamp, but it no longer worked.
'Keep calm Mia' she thought. She had reached a rock face and was slowly swimming along it. 'It had to lead to the exit. That's where I came from. ' She remembered the subject in theory, where Toni had explained that in the dark you sometimes don't know whether you were swimming up or down and you could lose your orientation completely. Mia had the feeling of hardly moving, she wanted to stay near the place where she had lost Sergio, because they would dive back again. She tried to keep her breathing calm so as not to use up too much oxygen. She knew that the others would notice that she was not there and that they would look for her.
Juanma and Sergio dived back into the cave. They dived straight through until they found the room with the air bubble. They appeared and Dani sat on the ledge with Rico.
"Did you leave Mia with Alvaro" asked Dani.
"Mia is not here." said Sergio. "I had her movement behind me the whole time, suddenly it seemed dark to me and there was no more light behind me. When you checked Alvaro's ad, I went outside with Alvaro and Juanma, because I was hoping for to find Mia on the way back and I also wanted to let them know. Alvaro stayed on the boat. "
Dani had turned white as chalk. "You mean she's here in the cave and you didn't see her on the way back?" Juanma and Sergio shook their heads.
Dani took a deep breath. "Ok, get everyone ready again. Juanma stays with Sergio and Rico with me. We swim back. Juanma, Sergio, you take the first junction on the left. We on the right. You stay very close together. Sergio, how did you swim?
"behind the group, Mia should have been in the main course," said Sergio.
"Please try to illuminate the whole corridor. Up and down. To the left and right. Then she has a chance to see the lights. We swim ten to 15 meters into the corridors and then out again." All started.
Dani hoped Mia hadn't turned into a junction. The cave was like a net, it would be difficult to find her then. He wanted to dive in the first junctions a bit with the boys, if she wasn't found, someone would have to go back to the diving school and rescue divers would have to be called in.
Juanma and Sergio saw the first corridor. Sergio stayed on the edge to light the main path and Juanma dived in.
When he was a few meters into it, he was about to dive back when he saw movement in the beam of light. He turned his head with the lamp. He saw diving fins. It had to be Mia and she just swam further into the corridor.
Juanma's heart leaped. He swam after her and cupped her foot. Mia started and turned to face him. Against the light she couldn't see Juanma. He took hold of the lamp and lowered it. Mia let him pull her up to him. Juanma held her and looked at her carefully and Mia held on to him and made the sign for "everything ok".
He could see in her eyes how relief spread. Juanma checked her oxygen meter. It showed a little less than his, but it should be ok. He pointed to the exit of the corridor, where Sergio's light could be seen, and they swam back down the corridor towards Sergio. Juanma had grasped Mia's hand and did not let go of it. He didn't want to imagine what had gone on inside her, but he also wanted to get back to Alvaro as soon as possible. When they got to Sergio, Sergio gave her arm a short squeeze and together they swam down the main aisle.
Alvaro dived into the cave with Toni. Toni swam into the second junction. Alvaro stayed behind, but they couldn't find Mia. When they got back to the main corridor, they saw divers swimming towards the exit. From a distance they couldn't tell who it was.
Juanma and Mia did not see Dani and Rico and Alvaro and Toni. When they were at the exit of the cave they saw that Toni's boat was also there. Anna and Zoe and Silvio waved and Silvio helped Mia to climb onto the boat. Zoe squeezed her so hard that Mia almost screamed. Juanma and Sergio took off their diving equipment, Silvio and Zoe helped Mia with hers. Anna had offered water to Mia.
Mia took a deep breath. Juanma sat down next to her and said "Are you okay?" Mia nodded and put her head on his shoulder.
"Listen to me Mia, I'm sorry, I had your movements behind me the whole time ..." Mia looked at him. "My lamp apparently broke, I still noticed your fins and saw the light, but suddenly everything was gone. And dark" Sergio took Mia briefly in his arms and Mia returned the hug. She wasn't mad at Sergio. She was relieved that everything was fine and that she was back in the boat.
To Juanma she said "When you grabbed my foot, I was so frightened." She almost laughed at the thought.
