Ramiro picked up Mia the next day after class. "Mia, my darling, I'm sorry, but I can't go with you, I have an urgent appointment. Should we postpone it?"
"I can drive alone with Alvaro and Isabel Papa." Mia said, although she was slightly disappointed. "If Alvaro comes with you, that's okay, if it's really okay dor you" she could hear the guilty conscience in Ramiro's voice very well.
"It's okay Papa" said Mia and hugged him. She and Alvaro started to pick up Isabel. When they got to the cemetery, Mia took a deep breath. before they went through the gate. Alvaro took her hand. Isabel led them to Mariana's grave.
Mia stood very still. She had been to the cemetery once at the very beginning. Since she had cried a lot, Isabel hadn't repeated it. MIa slowly crouched down and tugged a little here and there. Isabel looked at Alvaro. "Mia, I can ask if we got a pair of scissors and a shovel, then we can straighten the grave a bit." Mia nodded and Isabel set off. Alvaro crouched down beside her and put an arm around her. "Everything ok" he asked. Mia nodded and wiped a tear from her cheek. "I remember how she got me to bed. And sometimes she hummed the song. Sometimes she had tears in her eyes. I just remembered that in this moment." Alvaro pulled her up with him and took her in his arms. "She must be proud of you Mia."
Mia nodded. She took Alvaro's hand. Isabel came up to them again. She looked at Alvaro and Alvaro nodded slightly. Isabel put two scissors and a shovel on the floor. In addition, she had received a bag in which to throw what they cut off. She took a pair of scissors and began to cut the branches that were too long. She had already put Ramiro's wilted bouquet to one side. Alvaro pressed Mia's hand again and then took the shovel to dig up the weeds directly with roots. Mia watched for a while and seemed lost in memories.
Isabel looked at Alvaro. She didn't know if this visit was a good idea. Mia looked so fragile. Alvaro approached Mia again. "Shall we see if we can get a candle, flowers and a vase?" asked he. Mia looked at Isabel indecisively. Then she nodded. "Where I borrowed the things, they have everything you need for graves," said Isabel.
Alvaro took Mia by the hand and went with her to the shop. There were flowers and vases, grave lights and decorations. Mia had decided on a small vase and a glass candle holder, for which they bought a candle. Then there was a little white angel that Alvaro took from her hand and placed it at the cash register. When they had chosen a bouquet, he paid for everything and they went back to Isabel. She had made great strides. Alvaro helped her with a few bigger things and then they put the angel in front of the tombstone. While Isabel fetched water in the vase, Alvaro lit the candle in the glass. When the flowers were then also in the vase on the grave, they looked at the result of their work. "We could plant some more flowers," said Mia. "Roses," said Isabel, "she loved roses."
Alvaro had put his arm around Mia again and Isabel said, "I'll bring the equipment back."
Mia didn't say anything for a while. Alvaro held her in his arms and patted her lightly over the shoulder. After a while Mia said "can you leave me here alone for a moment" Alvaro looked at her and said "are you sure?" Mia nodded. Alvaro walked down the path Isabel had taken. Isabel looks a little puzzled. when she came back. "She wanted to be alone," said Alvaro. Isabel nodded. "It's ok," she said.
Both were silent for a while. Then Isabel asked "How was it at home on Sunday". "I had a short discussion with mama, but otherwise ok"
"You know, you can always talk to Ramiro and me, right"
"Thanks Isabel. I know and I will definitely need it a few more times." Isabel put her arm around to Alvaro.
Mia had knelt in front of the grave. She said nothing, she was just in thought. She softly hummed her mother's song. After a while she felt a hand on her shoulder. Alvaro sat down next to her on the floor and she put her head on his shoulder. "Thank you mom," Mia said very quietly now. "That you sent Isabel to me to show me the right way and Alvaro to accompany me on all further paths."
Now it was Alvaro who wiped a tear from the corner of his eye. He took Mia's hand and said, "And I promise to do everything in my power to take care of her". Both stayed like that for a moment, then Mia said: "Let's go to Isabel again." When they reached Isabel, Mia took her in her arms. Isabel stroked Mia's hair and said "I love you very much, darling".
Mia looked around again and said: "We have to buy roses in the next few days and plant them for Mama" Then they left the cemetery.
