"Mama" was on the display. Alvaro answered a little questioningly. Mercedes started talking straight away. "Javier had a heart attack, he still has me in his emergency contacts. The hospital just called me. They said it didn't look good, so I wanted to tell you immediately if you wanted to see him." Alvaro had turned white as chalk. He took Mia's hand. "A..but we can go there now" "In such a case, yes. There is a bell at reception. I'm driving now, should I pick you up?" "Um yes," said Alvaro. "Well, I'll be right there," said Mercedes. Alvaro's hands began to tremble, everyone looked at Alvaro, Mia sat up properly and took him in her arms. "What happened" she asked softly. "Javier ... my father ... he had a heart attack" Alvaro couldn't think clearly. Juanma got up and got him water. "Mama will pick me up, we're going to the hospital," he said quietly. "I'll come with you," said Mia. "No, you have the performance today and in such a case only family can come to him,"

" But.."

Juanma put her arm around Mia and said "You know how Mecedes is. In a situation like this she will be even more sensitive than usual." Mia had tears in her eyes.

"Please understand," said Alvaro. "I would have nothing better than that you are with me. But they won't let you in anyway. More than two people are usually not allowed anyway."

Mia nodded. She didn't want to make it harder for Alvaro than it already was.

Alvaro got dressed. "I'm waiting for mom downstairs." he said softly. Mia took him in her arms. She didn't know what to say. She wanted nothing more than to ride with him, but she knew he was right.

Zoe put her arm around Mia and pulled her slightly away from Alvaro. "Let him drive. Otherwise there will only be trouble with Mercedes" Juanma had followed Alvaro to the door. "I'll keep my fingers crossed, report if something is and you know something," he said. "I will. And Juanma, please distract Mia if I can't make it to the performance" Juanma squeezed Alvaro's arm again and said "You can rely on me."

When Mercedes drove onto the site, Alvaro was already there. "Won't Lupe come with you," he asked his mother. "I did not inform her. She must be focused on the performance".

Alvaro looked briefly at his mother. He wondered if that was a good decision.

When they arrived at the hospital, a lady at the reception told them that Javier was still with the doctor and they should wait. She didn't know anything about his condition.

At school, Mia sat on the bed when Alvaro was out the door. She didn't know Javier very well, but he had been trying very hard latelyto have a googd releationship with Alvaro. Juanma and Zoe sat next to her. They soon had to go to breakfast because they had to show up early for the competition. Mia said "I can't eat anything, you can go alone."
"Oh yes you will eat something," said Zoe to Mia- "Otherwise you will be hungry at the competition. Come on, we can't do anything anyway"
Mia was not easily persuaded to go to breakfast.

Mercedes and Alvaro were still waiting for a doctor to come to them. "I've always said he worked too much when we were still together," said Mercedes. After a while a doctor came out of the room where Javier was being treated. "Are you Senor Paz's family?" He asked. Mercedes and Alvaro stood up and both nodded.

"We have to ventilate him at the moment and he is not awake. As soon as he is stable we have to operate on him to clear a blood vessel. We hope that he will wake up in the next few hours."

The students had arrived at the competition. Alvaro had written briefly to Mia. how things were and he wrote that she shouldn't say anything to Lupe.

Lupe just called her group together to discuss the last few crops. "I don't understand where mom is," she said to her group. "Where's Alvaro?" she then asked Zoe.

"I don't know, he wanted to do something," Zoe said quickly.

The group was soon called. They all did very well. Simon had been very nervous before the performance, but the others had encouraged him. Even Lupe was satisfied in the end and Alex praised them very much. Ramiro and Alex knew what had happened, but they too had been asked not to say anything. Gaspar had come too and he warmly congratulated Zoe.

Alvaro kept looking nervously at his watch. He wanted to be there for Mia's performance. When his cell phone vibrated, he looked at the display and saw that Mia had written to him that it was just a break and then it would be her  and Juanmas turn. He replied that he would try to be there in time. Then he said to Mercedes "I have to go to Mia's performance. I'll be right back then."
