A line was crossed. And it could never be fixed.
"It's not your baby." Steve had said. The look on Buckys face told it all. In that moment, Steve practically ripped his heart out of his chest. The words slipped out but they couldn't be taken back.
It was too late. The damage was done. Bucky say there, tears in his eyes. He stared at Steve in disbelief. "Get out." Bucky says calmly. Calmer than to be expected. "Bucky. I didn't mean-" Steve starts.
"Get the hell out!" Bucky yells. "I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking. That's not what I meant." Steve said. Neither of them knew that you were at the door and heard everything. You had heard them start to raise their voices and opened the door right as Steve dropped his shell-shocking line.
"Steve I think you need to go." You say from the door. "Y/n, I didn't mean it like that. I didn't mean to say it. I-I I didn't mean to..." he says. "I really don't care what you meant. You crossed a line and now you need to leave." You say.
When they argued, you never took a side. But how we're you not supposed to take buckys side in this? You heard everything. Yes, Bucky jumped to conclusions but what Steve said was way worse than what Bucky thought. And you were infuriated.
Your voice was calm. You didn't want to raise it. You hated arguing in front of the babies, even though they were asleep. And you hated yelling. You also didn't want to escalate the situation. But you knew Bucky was a wreck and you knew Steve couldn't stay, not after that.
"Where am I supposed to go?" Steve asks. "I don't know. Go to Tony's. Get a hotel room. Sleep in the guest bedroom downstairs, just...you need to...take your stuff and just go downstairs." You honestly had no words for Steve right now.
And Bucky was silent. And obviously devastated. You didn't understand his Steve could say something like that. Especially since the three of you always talked about how DNA didn't matter.
"Bucky, I'm sorry. Please hear me out." Steve said. "No." You tell him. "You don't get to apologize or speak to him. Not yet. Steve just go before you make everything worse." You say. "What about the kids?" He asks. "I think I know how to take care of my children. I don't need your help. And I have Bucky. Because they're his babies too. Incase you forgot."
You realized you were sounding harsh, but it was still nothing compared to what Steve said to Bucky. "Ok. I'm sorry. I'll be downstairs if you need anything. I-I love you. Both of you." Steve says. "Steve. Do not play that card. Stop playing the victim. You know we love you but you don't get to say that right now. You need to leave. Now. Get the hell out." You tell him.
