You had left Bucky in the room and went out into the living room. Steve was still in the living room with the kids. You went out and Steve looked at you immediately. Searching your face for answers.
"He wants to talk to you." You tell Steve. Steve takes a deep breath and gets up off the couch, walking into their bedroom finding Bucky sitting on the bed, he looks at Steve and gets up.
He walks over to him and wraps his arms around him, hugging him tight. "I'm sorry. Y/n explained everything. I should have let you explain and not have jumped to conclusions. I'm sorry Steve." Bucky says.
While Steve had been out waiting while you were talking to Bucky he did a lot of contemplating. Hw did a lot of thinking. And he felt like he made an incredibly difficult decision but one that needed to be made, depending on the answer to the question he would ask Bucky.
The question that probably never should have been asked but he felt needed to. One that could make or break not just their marriage, but their friendship. They're life together. It could effect or ruin everything. So why did he ask it?
And why did bucky take so long to answer? Why did Steve do exactly what bucky did and jump to conclusions? Was he being a hypocrite? Or was he just anxious and upset and hurt like Bucky was?
"Bucky did you really think I would leave you all for Peggy?" Steve asks. Obviously the answer was no. Bucky had just jumped to conclusions. He had just gotten ahead of himself. And now so did Steve.
"N-no. I was just scared. You were talking about going back and that was the only reason I could think of that you would go back. I wasn't there for what happened with the baby so I didn't immediately think of it." Bucky says.
"Why did you stutter?" Steve asks Bucky. "What?" Bucky asks. "Why did you stutter when you said no? Why was me leaving you for Peggy the first thing that came to mind when I said going back? Why didn't you wait ten second and give me the benefit of the doubt?" Steve asks.
"For the same reason you're doing this now steve. We've been through so much. Our guard is always up and when everything seems to be going good, the other shoe drops so we self destruct to try and avoid getting hurt but it makes it worse." Bucky says.
"That's what you think of me? After all this time? I'd leave my family. I'd intentionally ruin what I have?" Steve asks. "No Steve. I know you wouldn't leave us for her but I was just scared of losing you. Again. And as for the self destructing? You're doing it right now. It's not intentional, but you keep doing it. Can't we just catch a break? Get our baby back?" Bucky asks.
"It's not your baby." Steve says.
Out of anger. But the statement. He could never retract. And it would change the course of their relationship. It would change everything.
A line was crossed, and it could never be fixed.
