You go out into the kitchen with Peter and it takes you about fifteen minutes to calm the twins down. You sit with them in the floor in the living room with Peter and they sit up against their little pillows and play with their toys.
You had heard the shower water start and knew Bucky had gotten in the shower and was now trying to clear his head. You couldn't imagine what was running through his mind right now. You knew he was a wreck and you knew that no matter how much you could try to convince him that what Steve said wasn't true, he would still doubt himself.
You didn't understand how Steve could have said that. It wasn't something Steve would have said. But he did. You couldn't find any other explanation to it, it was him, and if he said it, deep down, he had to have meant it, even just a little.
And now that this situation had blown up like this, about your children's DNA, you may not be able to bring back the baby you had lost, because you all knew who the biological father was. And you knew that would just hurt Bucky more. Abs that was the last thing you wanted.
"Are you okay?" Peter asks after a while. "I will be. As soon as Bucky is." You tell him. "I'm sorry you had to see and hear this. It's not fair to you." You say. "I wasn't listening. I heard nothing." He tries to say. But you knew better.
"Yes you did. We don't have to talk about it, but, whatever you did or didn't hear, we'll figure it out eventually. Don't worry." You say. He lays his head on your shoulder and you wrap your arms around him and hug him. "For what it's worth, I really don't think Steve meant what he said. I think it was all heat of the moment. And I never thought he'd say something like that. He's not like that." Peter says.
"That's what I thought too. But he said it. And here we are. Bucky has enough self doubt and for his husband, not even just that, his best friend, to tell him his kid isn't his just because he isn't the biological father, Bucky will never be able to let that go. And I'm stuck in the middle." You say.
"You're good at mediating though. If anyone can help them through this I think it would be you." Peter tells you. "I just want everything to be normal. I want my baby back, i want my husbands to not fight, I want my twins to have a normal life, I want you to have a normal life, a family, I want a baby girl. We can never seem to catch a break."
