Ember is running with the wolves through the forest as a kid, there's a boy dressed in fur. She can't see his face; it was always shrouded in darkness. The only thing she could see was his smile. They are laughing and playing, enjoying the moment of happiness, but then the wolves would vanish, Then the boy turns into Koda, and he vanishes too, Darkness closes in on her and she is left alone.

Ember woke up a little scared as her dream flashed through her head, it happens just about every night now. She didn't know why she was scared. She could see the faces of the wolves she played with as a kid, but it wasn't them that scared her. She actually felt safer with them, then she did anywhere in her hometown. The nightmares began when the adult's found out she was sneaking into the forest, they followed her and found her with the wolf pups.

The adults wanted to kill wolves, but the adult wolves stood between the adult humans and the young. The wolves had come to see Ember as one of their own.
