Day two, one out of three one shots.

Your eyes shot open to see the darkness of the very early morning. Your heart was pounding inside your rib cage from the nightmare you woke up from. Your breath hitched with the deep inhale you took before letting it go. You couldn't fall back to sleep. You were immediately fully awake to your disappointment.
Shadow stirred with you in his hold. His nose buried itself into your hair. You didn't think he was awake, yet you lied still.
"Are you all right?" he murmured.
You nodded. "Yeah."
"I can hear your heart racing," he said. "You had a nightmare."
"Is it obvious?" you asked.
"Very," he said matter-of-factly. His hold tightened on you. "I've got you. You're safe."
You clung to him. Your chest slightly ached from how hard your heart was thumping. Shadow's hand slipped up your shirt and rubbed your back.
"What time is it?" you asked.
Shadow looked over his shoulder. "1:17."
"Sorry," you apologized. "You can go back to sleep. I'm fine."
"Don't apologize. I'm not going back to sleep until after you do," he said.
"I don't want you to be tired," you said.
"You bought me a new bag of coffee beans yesterday," he countered. "I'll be fine. I'm concerned about you."
"I'm okay," you said.
"You're completely awake and knowing you, you'll stay awake without me putting you back to sleep," he observed.
"You're not my babysitter," you retorted.
"I'm not, but I'm your source of comfort as you are mine," he reasoned.
"So, what're you gonna do?" you asked.
"I'm putting you back to sleep," he said simply. His tone softened as he kissed your forehead. "It was a dream."
You settled against him with a soft sigh. Soft shushing came from his mouth. His hand stroked up and down your back. The pain in your chest evaporated.
"I'm here, I've got you," he murmured. "I won't let anything happen to you." Another kiss was pressed to your forehead.
Your alertness faltered slightly. You yawned silently. Your eyes closed and your heart rate gradually slowed. You gave in to Shadow's comfort. It took a little while, but you eventually fell asleep in Shadow's protective hold.
