"Why'd you put on sunscreen if you're wearing that?" Conan asked.
"Cause I can." You mumbled.
Doctor Agasa had planned a fishing trip for the kids, which meant Haibara, Conan, and you had been roped in. You now sat on the edge of the pier in a jacket and bucket hat, a fishing rod lazily propped between your knees.
"Aren't you hot?"
"Of course, I am." You grumbled miserably.
"Then why don't you take that off?"
You sighed. "I... don't want to tan."
He tilted his head like a confused puppy. "I thought people liked tanning."
"Scars don't tan." Haibara hummed from Conan's other side.
He looked at her, then back at you. "Why would you be worried about that?"
"Cause if I tan, they're going to stand out like beacons." You pouted. "They're already hideous as is."
His eyebrows furrowed. "Hideous? What're you on about?"
Before you could reply, the brats materialized. They all wore stern expressions. "You shouldn't talk about yourself like that." Ayumi protested.
"My dad has scars from being a fire fighter. Mom says scars make a person way cooler." Genta added.
"Yeah." Mitsuhiko nodded. "Scars mean you were tougher than what hurt you!"
They looked seriously upset by your words, as though you'd directed it at them. Seeing the little brats upset on your behalf... you couldn't stop the laugh from escaping your lips.
"We're serious!" Ayumi whined.
"I don't doubt it." You shook your head. "I just never imagined the day I'd be getting lectured by kids."
"You're a kid too." Genta grumbled.
"Yes, yes, of course." You chuckled, as you unzipped your life vest and slid off the jacket. The cool breeze finally reached your skin. You smiled up at the kids. "You're right. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have spoken like that."
The three kids beamed. They scampered back to their place, suddenly reinvigorated.
"What's got them so happy?" You asked, as you watched them excitedly chatter.
"It's not often they're able to convince you of anything." Conan smirked. He turned his gaze back to you, and his expression fell. "Really though, nobody feels that way about them."
You scowled over at him. "Give me a break. You've seen dozens of corpses, and even you paled when you saw them."
He frowned. "The first time I saw them, sure, but not because the scars themselves." He protested. "It was because I knew what caused those scars. As for the scars themselves..." He glanced back at the kids. "I think they put it well."

"Okay, everybody, it's time to head home!" The call came from behind you.
"Thanks for taking us fishing, Mr. Ejiri." Conan thanked the man.
"Of course! You and Doctor Agasa saved my life!" Ejiri smiled. "When he told me he had to hurry home to take care of an urgent call, I was happy to fill in!"
"There's the boat!" Ayumi chirped.
"Doc!" Mitsuhiko shouted towards the approaching boat.
"Hey, Doc! Check out our big catch!" Genta bellowed. As the boat neared, their excited shouts quieted. "It's not Doc."
