A/N: I want to apologize in advance if this chapter feels a bit rushed. I had a death in my family, so I wasn't able to fully focus. I hope it isn't too rough! Enjoy!

SKREE  SKREE SKREE

A deafening, shrill beep wrenched you from sleep.

"What's that noise?" Genta shouted as he and the rest shot awake too.

"It's the fire alarm." Haibara answered.

The five of you slid on your house slippers and hurried out of the room. One of the employees stood at the end of the hall.

"Please, calmly exit out through the back door." The employee directed.

"The back door?" Mitsuhiko muttered.

"The fire must be up front." You replied as you followed the stream of guests out the back door.

More employees directed everyone away from the property. Bright flames rippled on the roof of the inn, lapping at the trees above.

"Haibara, let's get further back." You called.

She followed your gaze and also noticed the flames that were slowly starting to engulf the trees. Haibara guided the kids further away, your retreat only stopped when you reached a steep cliff that dropped down to a raging river.

The kids all stared down over the edge.

"Woah, it's really fast." Ayumi chirped.

"And it's all full of mud." Genta mumbled.

"It's called sediment." Haibara hummed, peering down at the rushing water with them.

"There must have been a lot of rain upstream." Mitsuhiko noted.

Ayumi crept closer to the edge. You quickly caught her arm. "Hey, let's not..."

Something slammed hard into your back. You toppled, Ayumi getting dragged along with you.

The river you'd been watching now rapidly approached. You reached out with your free hand, clawing for anything to hold. With a painful jerk, you barely managed to snag a protruding tree root. You stopped your descent, but you were in an incredibly precarious position. You'd fallen halfway down the sheer embankment. Ayumi dangled below you, and below her the river raged unabated.

"Rin, Ayumi!" The boys screamed.

"Hang on!" Haibara shouted.

Dirt sprinkled over your face as the root started pulling loose. You paled.

"Hurry!" Genta cried over his shoulder.

"Here!" Mitsuhiko yelled, lowering a tree branch.

The branch hung just beside you, but you had no way to reach for it. You clenched your teeth, tightened your grip on Ayumi's hand, and tried to lift her towards the lifeline. "Dammit!" You hissed through your teeth as pain flared in your shoulders.

You'd nearly lifted her high enough when more dirt rained down on you. You dropped another two feet, swinging wildly, as the root ripped through the soil.

"Fuck..." You howled, the root acting like sandpaper on your naked palm.

The branch now dangled uselessly above you.

"The adults are coming!" Genta shouted.

"Rin!" Ayumi cried out as your grip on her hand started to slip.
