"Oi, Spikey Head, what the hell!" You snapped.

"What's with that nickname again?!" Heiji protested.

"You're being a dumbass." You hissed as you tried to dry your hair with a towel.

Heiji relented and sat down beside you. "I'm listenin'."

"That's not Shinichi."

"So ya said, but how can ya be sure?"

"The look in his eyes, the way he walks, the way he talks, his smell. Everything!" You spat.

"I get what yer sayin', he's not actin' like himself, but are ya sure it's not your emotions talkin'?" Heiji asked calmly. "Yer havin' a hard time trustin' strangers, then Kudo shows up actin' different..." You could tell he wanted to believe you, he wanted to trust your words without hesitation, but it was outlandish. You were claiming that the real Shinichi (in the form of Conan) vanished without a trace, and someone that coincidentally looked exactly like him took his place. All of this seemed like it was out of some sci-fi light novel. He was a detective. He had to follow the evidence, even if you didn't like where it pointed.

Doubt flickered through your mind. Maybe he was right... you were fried. Between the stress of the past month and the medications, could you say you were thinking clearly? You'd nearly had a panic attack when the mail man had pushed mail through the mail slot just three days ago. You looked down at the ground. If he'd really lost all his memories, it would be reasonable for his expression and the way he talks to be different, maybe even the way he walks. He'd been half drowned in the lake and now wore Heiji's clothes, his smell could very easily be masked under all of it. "I... I mean..." You clenched and unclenched your fists. "Maybe you're right." You put your face in your hands.

"Why don't ya get some rest? Tomorrow we can look at all tha evidence again. We'll know fer sure tomorrow night if he's tha real deal or not when tha transformation wears off. If yer right, we'll corner the bastard. Until then, we don't need 'im boltin' before we get answers."

"Yeah, you're right." You relented.

--------------------------------

You tried to sleep, you really did, but nightmares plagued your dreams again. You heard the door to the next room open and close. Footsteps thumped softly in the hallway. You maneuvered around Ran and Kazuha and cracked the door open. 'Shinichi' was turning the corner, his back to you.

Where is he going at this hour? You thought to yourself. Doubt flickered through your mind again. You clenched your jaw. To hell with it! Either he's an amnesiac who shouldn't be wandering alone, or he's a fraud up to something suspicious. You grabbed your jacket and slid it over your pajamas. You spared one last glance back at the sleeping teenagers, before slipping out of the room.

You hobbled after 'Shinichi'. You were slower, and you weren't as light on your feet. You quickly lost sight of him, but his pathing pointed to only one place. You followed him back towards the mayor's manor. Dawn broke as the paved path gave way to a muddy trail. Two pairs of footprints led to the front door. You stepped inside and followed the muddy footprints through the foyer. When you peaked into the living room, you froze. 'Shinichi' and the reporter stood mere inches apart, a knife handle separating them. Blood ran down the knife's handle and dribbled down 'Shinichi's' wrist.

Your blood turned cold. You stepped back, trying to avoid detection. The foot of your crutch landed on a piece of glass and slipped out from under you. You slammed hard into the ground. Your heart hammered in your chest as you scrambled to get back up. You sprinted out the door. Each breath burned in your chest. You would never be able to outrun him if he gave chase, so you ran into the forest. If he came after you, you'd be able to at least hide amongst the foliage. It wasn't the best plan, but it's all that you had.
