Jeopardy

After hours of searching, your search bore no fruit. The trail led further into the forest, but was eventually lost in the turmoil of a public park. You returned to your room, but had little rest.

When morning came, there was still no reply from Kaito. It took everything in your power to keep up your facade. To your surprise, Conan convinced Ran that you needed to help Haibara with a project.

You were grateful, but shocked that Conan had been so willing to let you go look for Kid without him. He insisted you at least bring Agasa with you, but didn't push you past that.

"Be safe." He whispered as you slid out of the back of the car.

"I will." You nodded.

"Have fun!" Ran waved as they pulled away from the curb.

You watched them drive off, before hurrying to Dr. Agasa's door.

The door was promptly opened by Agasa. "Ah, (Y/N), come in." He stepped aside for you. When you entered the house, he closed the door behind you. "Shinichi told me a bit about what happened. He said you needed me to drive you somewhere?"

You nodded. "I'm sorry to be an inconvenience, but..."

"It's alright." Agasa interrupted. "Shinichi also asked me to keep the place we go to a secret, so I'm sure this is very important."

A slight warmth seeped into the cold worry in your chest. "Thank you."

Without delay, the three of you loaded into his car. 'Three', because Haibara had invited herself along. You didn't protest, since you knew she was dependable. You directed Agasa to Kaito's home. You hated revealing it to anyone, but your worry outweighed anything.

"I'll be right back." You told them as you closed the car door. You hurried to the front door of his house, raised your hand, and knocked. You waited several agonizing moments, before you heard the door lock click. Relief washed over you. "Why haven't you been answering my calls?" You grumbled as the door was pulled open.

Your confidence faded when you saw the one opening the door. It was a young woman in her mid to late 30's, with short brown hair. Kaito's mom.

"Oh, and who might you be?" She hummed as she looked down at you.

"I... I'm a friend of Kaito. I'm Rin." You introduced.

"Oh?" She smiled softly. "I didn't know he had such a cute little friend~"

"Um... Is he around?" You asked nervously. "I haven't been able to get a hold of him..."

She cupped her chin in her hand. "Hmm. I haven't seen Kaito since yesterday morning."

You deflated at her words. "He... he hasn't called you or anything?"

She shook her head. "He said he had some work to do. He sometimes doesn't come home for a few days afterwards." She mused. "I'm sure he'll wander in before long."

"Oh... alright." You muttered. "But, um... if you hear from him, could you let him know I came by?"

"Of course." Mrs. Kuroba smiled.

You turned, and slowly dragged yourself back to the car. When you returned, you slid into the back seat in silence.

"Did you find him?" Haibara asked.

"No." You muttered.

"How are you feeling?" Conan whispered to you as everyone ambled into the classroom.

"I'm fine."

"Haibara told me what happened." He continued. "If you need to talk, I'm right here."

"I know."
