Leah's POV
I sighed yet again as I sat down on the bed. I thought about today, mostly about what Jin had said to me. He didn't seem too bothered about it, but I couldn't stop thinking about how I failed. How have I not noticed anything? How did I miss this?
"That's a big sigh," T said as she was getting dressed for bed. "You tired?"
I sighed once more before shrugging. "I guess."
T didn't immediately reply but I heard her walking around. Then she sat down next to me. "Hey, what's up?" Before I could reply, she went on: "I thought you liked the party," She looked down briefly. "Emil and I really tried with that cake."
I looked at her.
She shrugged. "We followed the recipe," She breathed out. "I guess baking isn't our thing."
I couldn't help but smile a bit. "It was a bit..." I thought about a good word. "Special."
"Yeah," She smiled too. "I guess it wasn't a good idea to let Emil crack the eggs," She thought some more. "And do the flour," She nodded. "And much of the other things," She then looked at me. "But c'est le geste qui compte, right?"
I smiled at her use of French. "True," I looked away again. "Jin loved it."
"He did," T let out a content sigh. "He loved his presents," She smiled at me. "You know him so well."
Right then, my smile dropped. I looked back down.
"Baby," She placed her hand on my thigh. "What is it?" Again, before I could reply, she added: "I thought we just agreed it was a great afternoon."
"We did," I sighed deeply. I thought about what Jin said before looking at T. I looked her in the eyes and immediately felt bad for having to upset her. So I looked back down. "It was all good."
"Tell me what's going on." She demanded, as if she could tell I was keeping something from her.
I licked my lips briefly. "Jin told me something," I paused a bit. "When we were in the park," I sighed. "I just can't forget about it."
T waited for a bit, I wondered if she was waiting for me to continue on my own. But she got impatient: "What happened?"
I kept looking down, though I reached for her hand and held it in mine. "They pick on him," I sighed before adding: "Kids at school."
"Oh," Was all she said. Then we both went silent. It seemed we both were surprised to hear this. "He is special," T finally concluded. "But he doesn't deserve to be picked on."
"No," I agreed and shook my head. I was really upset about all of this, especially since I wasn't there to protect him. "He doesn't." I sniffled.
T wrapped an arm around me. "Did he say much about those kids?"
I shook my head. "He doesn't seem like talking much about it," I then finally looked at her. "Why can't he talk about it?"
"Baby," She said softly. "Did you speak up to your parents when you were getting bullied?"
I let that question sink in before looking down again, shaking my head in the process.
"He probably didn't want to worry us," She pulled me closer to her, in an embrace. "We'll inform his school to watch out for him. If it doesn't stop, we'll take him somewhere else."
I gulped but nodded.
"Does Emil know?"
I pulled back to look at her. "He's protecting Jin."
T immediately smiled, the same reaction I had. Emil was raised well. "Good."
I nodded. "But they're picking on him now too."
"He'll be able to take it," She said, seemingly being very sure about that. "We have to make sure Jin won't get picked on anymore."
"He's not that different, is he?"
She looked at me again. "He is special, baby," She said, not making me feel better at all. "We both know that."
I looked away.
"But that doesn't mean kids can be mean to him," She squeezed my hand a bit. "I'll call the principal tomorrow, ok?"
I nodded.
"Good," She kissed the side of my head before getting back up. I heard her continue to get ready for bed. "Shouldn't you get ready too?"
"I miss talking."
I heard her stop moving. "Talking?" She sounded surprised. "Baby, we just talked about it."
"With my therapist," I clarified. I looked down. "I miss talking."
T didn't reply. I wondered if she was still having bad feelings regarding Eva and Heather. Since she learned how they acted towards me, she's been ignoring them altogether. I often felt bad for breaking up the friendship Heather and T had. T kept reassuring me I did nothing wrong. Then why did I feel bad?
I looked down as no response came. I didn't know why I thought T would answer. She didn't like talking about them anymore, especially with Eva's pregnancy seemingly going without a problem.
Instead of waiting some more, I released another sigh before getting up. I decided to get ready, as T had said before.
In all that time we were getting ready, T didn't respond to what I had said. We made eye contact and looked at each other, she'd smile but wouldn't say anything, as if our conversation was stopped abruptly.
We got in bed, still not talking, and got comfortable. I laid on my back, as I often did these days. I waited for T to settle into her position too. I released another breath before looking at her. "Good night, baby."
T looked at me for a bit before turning on her side to face me.
I looked at her, she still wasn't saying anything. "I love you."
She smiled a bit. "I love you too," She finally said. She released a deep breath before scooting closer to me. "I'm sorry."
I frowned a bit.
"I'm sorry you have nowhere to go to talk," She looked down briefly before looking back at me. "I wish I could help you like Eva can."
I thought a bit. "You can," I concluded. "I guess it's difficult for me to speak freely because I don't want to cause you any harm."
She smiled then. "I'd rather have you hurt me than keep it all bottle up," She then wrapped her arms around me. "Why else would I have married you?" She smiled.
"Hmm," I faked to think about her question. I wrapped my arms around her too, bringing our bodies impossibly close to each other. "Because I'm a real catch." I joked.
But instead of laughing alongside my joke, she had a heartfelt smile on her face. "I couldn't have said it better," She pulled me even closer. "You surpassed my wildest dreams," She said dreamily. "I'll spend my life thanking you for that."
I was taken aback by her warm and touching words. "I love you."
"I love you too," She smiled more. "And our special and beautiful children too."
I smiled before leaning in and kissing her.
