Leah's POV
I always wondered how our first night with a child would be. I wondered whether we'd wake up constantly because they needed attention. I wondered whether we'd be able to get some sleep or none at all. I wondered whether our excitement about our own child would keep us awake... I didn't know what to expect.
But strangely enough, it wasn't that different from before. T and I had fallen asleep fast and were able to sleep all through the night. It seemed we were both too tired, maybe because of the long journey we went through, and Emil hadn't woken us up. I wondered if he was really fine or if he wasn't too sure whether he could wake us up... I didn't know what went on in his head. But I could imagine this was all a lot to take in for him.
As the sunlight got into our room, I slowly opened my eyes. I smiled when I saw T already looking at me. "Good morning, mother of Emil."
She giggled immediately. "Of course, you had to say something like that."
I smiled at her. "You're welcome."
"In that case," She scooted closer to me, wrapping her arms around me. "Good morning to you too, mother of Emil."
I nodded, I was happy to hear that title. It did something to me. I was proud to be called Emil's mother. "Shall we go wake up our son?"
T's face lit up when I said that, as if the mere thought of doing that brought her so much joy. "Let's wake up our boy."
We both got up. We got changed and hurried to Emil's room. We stood in front of the door for quite some time, as if we were both unsure about opening the door.
It was T who eventually opened the door. We entered and saw that he was slowly waking up. We went to his crib and smiled at him.
"Good morning, Emil," T smiled even more. I was always so happy seeing how much joy Emil brought her. He changed her. He completed her. "How did you sleep?" She asked as she slowly picked him up.
He was clearly still a bit sleepy as he had trouble keeping his eyes open. He was rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
I smiled at his cuteness. "Someone didn't sleep enough?"
Emil looked at me then. "Hungwy!"
I looked at T. "I think he's hungry."
T gave me a look. "How did you know that?" She shook her head, smiling in the process. "Let's get you some food." She carried him all the way downstairs.
I followed after them and saw how T sat down at a chair.
"Baby," She said, not really paying attention to me. "Why don't you make his breakfast?"
I looked at them before going to the fridge. I then suddenly realized I didn't know what a toddler eats... I looked back at T, who was playing with Emil. "Baby," I gulped. "What do I get him?"
She looked at me. "The special cereal in the cupboard above the counter. Mix that with a few pieces of bananas. And pour a tiny cup of milk."
"Right..." I looked for the things she said but felt so lost. I was suddenly aware of how my lack of experience, of life experience, was showing.
As if T seemed to catch on, she came to me. "Here," She said, handing me Emil. "I'll make it today." She kissed my cheek before taking the things she needed.
While she was preparing Emil's breakfast, I decided to take a seat at the dining table. Emil was seated on my lap. He was looking at me with his big curious eyes. I wondered what he was thinking.
"What do you want to do today?" I asked, as that was the first thing that came to mind.
He tilted his head to the side. "Pway!"
I smiled. "We can play with toy cars, or we can make a puzzle, or play with stuffed animals."
He clapped his hands excitedly.
"I'm sure we'll be able to find something to do." I pulled him closer to me, hugging him. It felt surreal, to hug my son. It's odd because you want the connection to be like you always imagined, but it's a bit awkward at first. I wanted him close, but I didn't want to scare him off. On paper, he was my son, but in reality... It needed more time.
"There we go," T sat down with us, Emil's breakfast on the table. "Who's hungry?"
Emil's attention went to T immediately. "Me, me, me!"
I smiled.
T looked at me, I could tell she wanted me to hand her Emil so she could feed him. I smiled and handed Emil to T. "Let's eat." She said and started feeding him.
I watched them for a bit before getting up. I started making breakfast for T and myself. I guess I wanted to keep myself busy while T was busy too. It was odd. Normally, T and I spent our attention on each other. But now, Emil took a lot of attention away. It was something I definitely had to get used to.
"Baby," T suddenly said, pulling me out of my thoughts. "Come here."
I put everything down and walked back to the dining table. I sat down with them and noticed Emil had finished his breakfast. "Have you eaten well?"
T smiled at Emil. "He has," She rocked him gently and looked back at me. "We haven't told our parents yet."
I slowly nodded. "Right."
"So I thought we could visit them," She looked at me for a bit, seemingly waiting for my response. "Maybe your mom first? She knew more about this process than mine."
"S-sure," I nodded. My eyes went to Emil, he was sleeping in T's arms. I couldn't help but smile at him. I then looked back at T. "So we tell everyone now?"
She nodded. "He's our son now," She looked back at Emil. "No one can take him away anymore."
I nodded and looked back at Emil. "Yeah," I smiled. "Our son."
