Leah's POV
"So he has no parents?" I asked again, I was shocked to hear this.
"No," The lady from the center shook her head. "He was brought here by a woman who found him in the street."
"Poor boy..." T shook her head, she was clearly distraught by this news.
I gulped and looked at the lady. "Did that affect him at all?"
Even though T was shocked to learn about Emil's rough past, her attention peaked when she heard my question. It seemed her mother instinct had already woken up.
"Not that we noticed," The lady said. "He's a very social and fun boy, as you two might have seen," She said, gaining her nod from us. "I think he does want a warm home, two people who will love and cherish him, who will protect him."
T immediately raised her hand, wiggling it around like an eager student in the class. "I'll give him that."
The lady and I both chuckled. "We know, baby," I said. "We'll make sure he will be happy."
The lady smiled when she heard that. "That would be great, he deserves it."
"I wonder," I started, I wasn't sure whether it was a good thing to ask what was on my mind or not. But I wanted to know... "Your center passed us, even though we had a tough profile... What made us pass?"
I could see how T got worried about this question. Almost as if she was afraid they'd suddenly change their mind about letting us pass.
The lady smiled. "We know you got in this relationship when you were too young. We know it was illegal. But still you two stood up for your relationship," She smiled more. "You two formed a united front and that's what we love to see. It shows the stability in your relationship, and that's what a child needs: a stable home."
I smiled as she said that. I then looked at T, seeing her smile as well. "Thank you," I said to the lady. "That means a lot."
"So how old is he?" T suddenly asked, clearly wanting to change the subject. "My wife and I were guessing he would be 2 or 3, would that be close?"
The lady nodded. "He's going to turn 2 next month actually."
T smiled more, as if the image of a birthday party excited her immensely. I could tell she wanted to plan that birthday party already.
"Does he wear diapers still?"
The lady nodded. "We can give you a package when you leave with him."
I smiled. "That'd be great, thank you."
"Can we now see him?" T asked, she was clearly done with this. She just wanted to get to Emil.
"Sure," The lady got up. "All the papers are done and signed. The boy is yours now."
It seemed those were the only words T needed. She got up and rushed out of the room. "T," I hurried after her, completely forgetting about the lady. "Baby!"
I saw her stop at the door of Emil's room. Emil was on the ground, playing with his toys. When he saw us, he smiled instantly.
T walked to him before sitting down with him. "Hi Emil, do you remember us?"
He giggled and clapped his hands excitedly.
"I think that's a yes," I said as I sat down with them too. "Do you know why we're here?"
He kept giggling, I wondered if he knew. Maybe he hoped for it. I don't know. But he was very happy.
T carefully took him in her arms, the first time she actually dared to be so close to him. I wondered if she kept a certain distance before because she wasn't sure he could be hers. "We're taking you away," She said gently. "We're going home."
Emil looked at T, the look on his face changed. He wasn't sad or happy. He seemed genuinely touched by those words.
"I'll take his stuff," I got up and went through the room. I took the clothes and toys I found, as I guessed those were his. I put them all in a bag before looking back at them. I smiled when I saw how they were making funny faces at each other. "I'm done. We can go."
They looked at me. "Ok," T said before looking at Emil. "Are you ready?"
Emil clapped his hands excitedly. "Home." He repeated.
T and I smiled. "Yes." We both said.
We walked back to our car. On our way there, we passed the lady at the reception. She handed me a bag of diapers before saying goodbye to Emil.
T secured Emil in the car while I put away his bag. We then both got in the car. "Ready?" I asked her.
She took the steering wheel in her hands, gripping it tightly. She looked in the rearview mirror, probably at Emil. She smiled. "Ready."
__________________________T parked the car at our house. She then looked back in the rearview mirror and smiled. "We're here, Emil."
Emil clapped his hands excitedly.
We both got out of the car. I went to the trunk to get Emil's bag while T immediately went for Emil. The way she carefully took him out... It was very sweet.
We walked to the front door. I opened it, letting them both enter before entering myself.
I put Emil's bag onto the ground by the stairs, then I walked to T and Emil.
"This is your new home, Emil." T said. She showed him around, as if he'd remember most things...
I smiled at them. I was so happy for T. She was visibly happy. This was indeed what she needed.
After the big welcome, we had dinner and watched some tv together. Then we had to put Emil to bed.
"Have a good night in your new bed in your new home, Emil." I smiled at him.
"Tomorrow, we'll do a lot of fun things together." T smiled at him.
Emil smiled at us. He seemed really happy to be here. I wondered how he would be feeling. It's a big change...
T and I left the room and let out a breath. It seemed we were both emotional because of this amazing change.
For the rest of the evening, we didn't really do much. It seemed we were too busy with Emil being here.
When we went to bed, we smiled at each other. We laid on our sides, facing each other.
"I'm so happy," T stated. "He's perfect."
"Yeah, he is," I scooted closer to her, pulling her closer to me. "He'll be happy here."
T nodded. "We'll make sure of that."
"Goodnight baby," I smiled at her. "I love you."
"I love you too, baby."
