"You know, if you didn't wear that dorky tie all the time you might actually get laid once in a while."
"Gabriel." Castiel hissed under his breath.
Gabriel tossed his arms up into the air innocently with a smirk. "I'm just saying. Every week we meet for coffee and most of the time you can't stop talking about this gorgeous mechanic who lives in the apartment under yours. 'Bout time you did something about it."
Castiel closed his eyes and let out a breath. He was lucky that it took this long for his brother to start to pester him about his latest crush. "He is out of my league."
"Right. Cassie, can I tell you something?"
"I'm afraid, but continue."
Gabriel leaned across the small coffee table of their favorite coffee shop and met his brother's eyes with a seriousness that made the light mood suddenly fall heavy. "You're a catch. I know you don't think so. Maybe it's because most of the guys you have pursued are giant assholes... but you're fucking awesome. I'm not just sayin' that 'cause you're my brother. I have had many people ask me about how an Adonis like you made it into our family gene pool. So grow some balls and ask the guy out. Worst that can happen is he says no and you have to move back in with me to escape the shame of seeing him every day."
Castiel was struck quiet for a few moments as he simply looked into his brother's eyes for truth. There were no traces of the usual signs when Gabriel lies. "But-"
"The only butt you should be talking about is his." Gabriel leaned back in his seat as if the seriousness had flown out the door. "And if he hurts you I'll kick his ass."
More silence fell on Castiel as he looked down at his coffee and seemed to think as deeply as he could on the subject. "I should ask him out."
"Bingo was his name-o." Gabriel broke out into a radiant smile. "He doesn't stand a chance, little bro."
"Thank you."
"Yeah yeah." Gabriel gave his brother a wink when their eyes met again. "You helped me through a lot of hard times, I think the least I can do is convince you to get laid."
"Gabriel-"
"I mean 'convince you to find a nice man who you will later marry'."

Castiel's entire body was shaking. He wondered idly if the people passing by him in the lobby noticed it. Maybe they would think he was having a breakdown and would kindly escort him back to his apartment where he was safe. But no one stopped or so much as gave him a second glance. With a heavy breath he stepped forward into his building and saw the man he had been dreaming about for months now.
The mechanic, Dean Winchester, was talking politely to the security guard as he did every day when he came home. Castiel knew this because the guard was also a friend of his and gave him the intel when he inquired. Dean was now tossing his head back and laughing like he had heard the funniest statement in the history of language. Castiel wished he could share that laugh, be the cause of that laugh, or even fill his apartment with that laugh.
He found the courage through replaying Gabriel's words from earlier in his head. With each step he took toward Dean Winchester he felt more and more uneasy. There were a million ways to reject a person, Castiel hoped Dean would at least do it politely. Then he wouldn't ever have to wonder if maybe they could have been something. After this Castiel would know for sure that he wasn't good enough for the man who was now only a couple feet away from him.
The guard, Garth, noticed Castiel approach and met his eyes with a polite smile. "Mr. Novak, how are you today?"
Castiel felt his throat dry as the announcement made Dean turn to face him. He tried his hardest to keep his eyes on Garths. "I-I am fine. How are you?"
"Good, good." Garth smiled wider, if that was possible for a man who seemed to spend his whole life smiling. "Is there anything I can help you with?"
"Um-no." Castiel finally found his motor skills functioning and turned to see Dean studying him with a raised eyebrow. "It can wait." And just like that Castiel lost every nerve he had and was about to turn and flee.
But then Dean spoke. "You're the dude with the short friend who likes to rock out to eighties music at three in the morning, right?"
At this, Castiel paused with widening eyes. "Gabriel?"
Dean shrugged. "I don't know. I just know every time I see you with him in the lobby I always know that at three in the morning I will hear some hair band classics."
"I apologize." Castiel flushed with the intention of murdering Gabriel the next time he saw him. He always worried that when Gabriel stayed over and played music he would disturb his neighbors. "I will make sure he does not do it again."
"No problem." Dean cracked a smile that seemed to glitter across his eyes. "It's kinda fun."
Castiel searched his mind for something else to say but came up short. Instead he nodded as politely as he could with feeling like his bones would snap at the movement.
"Dean!" A woman's voice rang out from the lobby.
Castiel took a step back just in time to see a short blonde woman crash straight into Dean's chest. They both let out loud laughs as they embraced. Castiel watched the hug and felt every single rejection scenario play out again in his mind. He never considered that Dean would have a girlfriend. But he should have figured. Before he could wait and see if tears would start to rise in his eyes, Castiel turned on his heel with a heavy heart.
Every step away the laughter seemed to diminish. The laughter that Castiel wished he could hold but knew would never be his. He wondered if moving in with Gabriel would really be that bad. Would it be worse than seeing Dean's face every day and knowing that he would never have him?
"Hey!"
Castiel was too distracted with his escape that he didn't notice who said the word or that it was directed toward him. His mind was still reeling from the rejection. He knew he shouldn't be so surprised, or that he shouldn't work himself up over this but he couldn't help it. He was only human.
"Dude." The voice came again but this time right behind Castiel just as a hand grasped onto his upper arm.
Castiel turned to see Dean staring at him with a look of almost curious confusion. "Dean."
"So you know my name but I don't even know yours?" Dean's lips curled up into a small smile.
"Castiel Novak." Castiel searched Dean's eyes for a reason why he would walk away from his girlfriend, who was obviously excited to see him, to inquire his name.
"Castiel. Cool." That's when Castiel realized Dean's hand was still firmly wrapped around his bicep. "So, I got this box set of the Lord of the Rings but I don't have anyone to watch it with. Maybe you could come over some night? I can make dinner."
Castiel's eyes widened until he thought they would fall out of their sockets. "Won't your girlfriend want to watch them with you?"
"Girlfriend?" Dean's face drew up in confusion. After a few moments something seemed to dawn on him as realization washed over his face and was met with a soft smile. "That girl back there? That's Jo. She's like my sister. I'm gay."
"Gay?" Castiel was still trying to process everything since his mind had already made up that he was rejected. Now he was so stunned he couldn't seem to focus on the depth of Dean's words.
"Yeah. Like I like men. A lot." Dean grinned a little wider. "You okay, Cas?"
"Yes. I'm okay. You are gay." Castiel didn't know what was coming out of his mouth at this point, as he stood staring into mesmerizing green eyes with a body that had gone completely numb since Dean first turned him around.
"I think we established that." Dean chuckled. "So... movie night?"
"Movie night." Castiel nodded as he said it. For the first time since getting the courage to ask Dean out, he felt a smile ache at his dimples. "I will be there."
"Awesome sauce." Finally, Dean realized he was still holding onto Cas and he let his arm drop to his side. He shifted a little nervously on his feet. "You like spaghetti?"
"I love spaghetti."
