Dean woke up to an empty bed, the sheets ruffled as a remnant of the warm body that used to lay beside him. It was an aching feeling knowing that the man who spent every night by his side was still there even after all these years, an ache that was pleasant but nonetheless potent. The feeling was fleeting away from his mind at the sound of two sets of small feet pattering toward his door. A knock came, small in sound but loud in spirit, just as it did most every morning.

"Daddy?" His daughter's voice squeaked out as the door cracked just slightly on its hinges.

Dean wrestled with the sheets until he was sitting up just as his daughter and son swept into the room and climbed up into his bed. Mary's hair was a mess, sticking in every direction, but still as beautiful as ever. Bobby had his thumb wedged in his mouth which meant his ascent onto the bed was clumsy and adorable.

As the two of them scampered up and fell effortlessly in Dean's lap, all he could do was wrap his arms around them and kiss their heads. Mornings like this remind Dean of why he chose to stay at home, why he ignores the snide comments of being 'Cas's perfect little housewife', and why he will always love his children more than he will ever be able to fathom.

"I had a bad dream." Bobby whimpered softly before pressing his face into Dean's chest and sniffling.

Mary sighed but laid her head against her father's shoulder and waited for the stories that Dean would tell to them when they were scared or hurt. Most mornings they would just eat breakfast and talk about their dreams, but when Bobby had his nightmares they all needed the closeness that the nest of blankets gave.

"Is that so?" Dean lowered his eyes to the nodding head and ran his fingers through the light brown hair idly. "And what was this one about?"

"You and Dad died." Bobby's voice wavered in a heartbreaking manner that made Dean swallow roughly. "And Mary and me were alone."

Mary sucked in a breath and tensed. That was when Dean decided that he would tell them a story they hadn't heard before, one he was reluctant to tell but at this time it seemed perfect to calm his precious children.

"When I was about your age, Mary, Uncle Sammy was just a tiny baby." Dean closed his eyes in fear that he couldn't spill out the words if he looked down into his daughter's crystal blue eyes. "Your grandmother had just brought him home and life was really good. It was just Grandma, Grandpa, Sammy and me. We were a happy little family. A couple weeks after Uncle Sammy was home, a fire started in our house. Grandpa gave Uncle Sammy to me and told me to get out, so I did. But your grandparents... they never made it out."

"Is that why we don't know them?" Mary asked with a hitch in her voice.

Dean instinctively pulled them tighter into his arms and tried to suppress the sob building in the back of his throat. "Yes, sweetheart, they died in that fire. I thought that I would never be able to live without them with me. But you know what happened? Your Grandpa Bobby and Grandma Jody took us in. They raised us as best they could. I know the fear of losing parents, I've lived it, but it wasn't all bad. We have Grandpa Bobby and Grandma Jody now and I am happy. I promise you that I will try my very hardest to never leave your side, I will fight my way through hell to be here, but I want you to know that there are always others out there who will never leave you. You will never be alone. There is no reason to fear that."

"We will still have Grandpa and Grandma and Uncle Sammy and Uncle Gabe?" Bobby let his thumb slip as he mumbled into his father's chest.

Dean let a small smile slip. "Always. Your Dad and I will never let you two be alone. You have a family, and that means that no one will ever be alone. Nightmares are only when you close your eyes. When your eyes are open you have all of us here loving you and caring for you."

"Promise?" Mary placed her palm against Dean's cheek softly. "Promise us?"

Dean let his eyes open as he peered down at two sets of misty eyes. "I promise."

'

"Dad's home!" Mary shrieked with excitement as she took two stairs at a time down to the front door.

Bobby was huffing air out as he struggled to keep up with his sister's run. "Dad!"

The door swung open and Cas stormed in with a sour look on his face and a day's work fuming inside his mind. Before he could properly begin to take his coat off or drop his suitcase, he was pelted in the shins by two small bodies.

"Hey, you two." Cas warmed his mood as he smiled down at his grinning children. "Did you behave for Daddy today?"

Mary nodded enthusiastically. "We did! We made a cake because Daddy said you had a tough meeting today! It's chocolate!"

"With chocolate icing!" Bobby squealed in delight as he shoved his hands up and balled them into fists.

Cas dropped his suitcase, kicked the door shut, and lifted his son up until he was setting on his hip. Their eyes locked just as Bobby leant in and placed a kiss against his cheek. Mary was already tugging at his pants and trying to get him into the kitchen. With a light chuckle Cas let himself be drug toward where he could hear the radio faintly stringing off guitar chords.

Upon entering the kitchen, he sucked in a breath. His husband was turned away from him but swaying his hips softly to the melody playing through the air. Mary ran up to his side and perched on a stool to help him finish he dishes. The weight on his hip shifted until he felt a head lay against his shoulder.

No matter the stress of work, or the pains of dealing with people he disliked, when he came home to his family there was nothing able to weigh on his mind. The four of them were everything he had, everything he could ever call his home. Moments, precious simple moments, like this reminded him of everything he had in this life and the happiness that he had constantly chased that he finally had.

"How was work?" Dean broke his thoughts as he finally turned and shot his husband a beautiful smile. "Hope the meeting wasn't too harsh."

Cas let out a sigh as he carried Bobby over and took a seat at the table. "It was grueling, but it's my job. How was your day?"

"It was good." Dean glanced over at Mary as she tried to whistle and busy herself with more dish drying. "We had a little talk this morning."

"Oh?"

Bobby lifted his head and looked up into Cas' eyes. "Daddy promised us that me and Mary would never be alone."

Cas paused just a moment to weigh the words that were being the spoken, the promise that was mind. It only took a moment before he set his palm over Bobby's heart and stared into his eyes. "You will never be alone, either of you. Your Daddy and I will never leave. If something unforeseen were to happen, you have everyone who loves you to look out for you."

Bobby nodded with a smile as he snuggled himself back into Cas' chest and breathed out softly. "Okay."

The two men met eyes and both paused. In Dean's eyes Cas could see the promise, the knowledge that no matter what Mary and Bobby would be just as taken care of as Dean and Sam were. There were the scars in Dean at losing his own parents that made this promise solid, that made it everything.

"Can we have cake now?" Mary piped in with an innocent smile.

"Sure, sweetheart." But before Dean started for the cake knife, he walked over to Cas and dipped down to place a chaste kiss on his husband's lips. "I love you."

"I love you, too." Cas smiled as he felt the warmth from Dean's lips ghost over his lips.

"I love you, three!" Mary giggled.

"I love you, four." Bobby mumbled into Cas' neck, too tired from all the playing that day to really show much enthusiasm.

The promise stayed intact as Mary and Bobby grew with both their fathers forever at their sides.
