"It's just one night." His mother smiled gingerly as she fixed the tie around his neck, patting it a couple times for good measure. "Maybe you'll meet a nice boy there and he will dance with you."
Castiel clenched his fists. "Mother, you have been watching too many Lifetime movies. The only reason I agreed to go was so that you would have pictures."
The doorbell rang, causing his mother to clap with excitement while he sagged forward with exhaustion. How was he able to get past Junior Prom but not Senior Prom? His mother had been happy enough letting him skip last year. But now she had fantasies in her mind of him meeting a nice young man and bringing him home to meet her. If only she knew that Castiel was an outcast at school.
On the opening of the door Castiel and his mother was greeted by a cheery Anna. "Hey!" Her shimmering red hair blended so well into her black evening gown that Castiel almost wished he was straight and they were dating.
"Anna!" Castiel's mother gave her a quick embrace, whispering in her ear something too low for Castiel to pick up on, "Do try and get him out of his shell."
'
The punch was awful, the lights were atrocious, not to mention every single grinning peer of his was dancing and laughing like it was their last night on Earth. If Castiel was lucky he would manage a smile in the time of the entire dance. Anna was at his side as they waltzed in, her body automatically swaying to the music.
"This is going to be fun, Cas, just wait and see." Anna whispered in his ear with something that sounded devious.
Castiel turned and glared down at her. "What-"
"Hey."
The two friends turned and found themselves standing in front of the school's wrestling captain Dean Winchester. Anna grinned and winked at Dean as Castiel cursed whatever odds brought this man in front of him. As if this night couldn't get any worse, all he needed was to have rejection of this God in front of him.
"Hi." Anna giggled and practically clung to Cas' arm until it was painful. "Where's Charlie?"
Dean snorted lightly and pointed over his shoulder. "On the dance floor. She has been watching the door like a hawk for you."
Confused, Castiel turned and raised his eyebrows at his friend. "Charlie Bardbury?"
Anna nodded as she eased away from Castiel. "Yeah... you know how the school doesn't allow same sex couples to come to prom together? Well you and Dean here were our dates... but-uh-would you mind if I danced with her?"
Maybe Castiel should have been angry, but instead he smiled warmly and shook his head. "Go have fun. Use protection."
Dean laughed as Anna blew them both a kiss and headed toward the dance floor with her arms raised. It left a silence between the two men, both shifting idly and looking at all their peers around them. Castiel wondered why Dean would bring Charlie, just to have her ditch him, when he could have any girl in this room attached to his hip.
"So... you're Castiel, right?" Dean ducked his head, rubbing at the back of his neck.
"People call me Cas." As the music grew louder, Castiel shrunk back a little only to find Dean follow him. "I guess Anna didn't formally introduce us."
"It's not like we don't know each other. We have had the same classes since like preschool." The wrestler shifted until he was standing right beside Cas, their shoulders brushing from time to time. "You're the smart guy who could care less about everyone else."
"That's a very simple description." Castiel tilted his head to meet Dean's eyes. "But yes, I guess I am."
Dean nodded and turned his head back to the scene before them, bopping his head along to the beat.
"Can I ask you a question?"
Dean nodded again, this time turning again so their eyes could meet. "Shoot."
"Why'd you bring Charlie? I mean-I know you could go with any girl, so I would have-"
"I didn't want to bring a girl." Dean stated as if it was the most obvious statement in the entire world.
And Castiel was too thrown by the statement to do anything but let his jaw drop and turn his head back to the dance so Dean wouldn't see how stunned he really was. Was Dean saying... was he saying he would have rather brought a guy? Maybe it was Benny, the two of them were pretty close. Not that Castiel noticed things like that...
"Is it Benny?" Castiel damned the way his mouth worked before his filter could catch up.
That brought a roar of laughter from Dean. "Nah, man, Benny is into the ladies as much as I am into the gentlemen. I actually had my eyes set on another guy."
Castiel's eyebrows furrowed in thought. They weren't friends, and maybe Dean had only told him because he himself was out of the closet in the school, but his curiosity was going to kill him. What kind of a guy would turn the head of Dean Winchester?
"Gordan?"
"Nope."
"Bartholomew?"
"He's got nice eyes, but his personality is in the shitter. Try again."
Castiel bit his bottom lip going through any guys in this school that were attractive and/or hung out with Dean a lot. "Aaron?"
"No. I'll give you a hint." Dean paused taking in a deep breath. "He has blue eyes."
Blue eyes? How was Castiel supposed to know what blue-eyed wonder Dean was talking about? In his deep thought, he didn't notice Dean's amusement as his face scrunched in deep concentration. As the songs trickled by and the laughter came and went in waves, Castiel found himself stumped. He never paid much attention to eyes unless they were the green ones looking at him right now.
"I need another hint."
Dean crossed his arms over his chest with a thoughtful expression. "His best friend is a fiery red head."
The only red heads Castiel knew in the school were Anna and Charlie. Anna didn't have any guy friends except him, but Charlie had many. "Kevin? Garth?"
"No and no." Dean's laugh bordered on pity. "Dude-"
"What about Balthazar?" Castiel remembered Anna saying she had hung out with him once upon a time.
"For Christ's sake, Cas. It's you."
"Me?" Castiel turned his body and stared Dean down with almost anger. "What do you mean it's me?!"
"I mean-" Dean took a step closer toward him and smiled shyly. "-I have had the biggest crush on you since forever. When Charlie brought up taking a guy so she could ditch him for Anna, I figured Anna would ask you. Then we'd both be 'dateless' and I don't know... it's stupid now I guess."
Castiel was stunned into silence. He just stood there staring down the man that had been in more than one of his daydreams over the years. What was it about him that made Dean interested? All the guys he had listed previous were better in almost every way. So why was Dean confessing this at their Senior Prom where he should be going out with the hottest guy in the school?
Dean seemed to pale a little, his smile receding. "Look, I'm sorry. I didn't know if you'd even-"
The words were cut off when Castiel surged forward and pressed their lips together. The two melted against each other, deepening the kiss as cheers and a couple whistles rang out. Cas savored the feeling of Dean against him as they both seemed to sway along with the music. It felt like years passed by before he broke the kiss and found himself pushed back towards the dance floor with Dean's arms wrapped around his waist.
'
A handful of years later Castiel's mother cried as Dean and Cas walked down the white trimmed aisle with matching tuxes and their fingers intertwined, matching rings placed promisingly on both their left ring fingers.
