I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you.

Smoke rose from the cigarette perched between Dean's calloused fingers. It danced up into the night sky disappearing into the blanket of stars. It was a lonely Kansas night that he found himself leaning against the hood of his Impala with a lifetime of memories running circles in his mind. As he closes his eyes to the crickets and rustling leaves, he finds himself back at his childhood home.

The smell of his mother's homemade pie fills his senses until he can practically taste the warm apple on the tip of his tongue. It was the first summer of the rest of his life. His father had tossed him the keys to his car and told him to drive until life made sense. Looking back now, Dean almost laughed at the fact that the first place he drove was to his best friend's house.

Another memory melts into the back of his eyelids. The feel of his tuxedo itching against his neck made him even now reach up and scratch at his skin. He can remember the wedding bells, still ringing in his ears to this day. He can remember the way his heart had sunk when he told his fiancé that he couldn't go through with it. Because in Dean's mind, even back then, he was always searching for the true love that it took him decades to realize was right in front of his eyes. He can even remember his best friend coming to him after the failed wedding and drinking stale beer with him to keep him from losing his mind.

Dean remembers the way his Cajun lover had made him dinner almost every night without fail. He can still feel the way that man had made Dean think there was no greater love in the world to be had. But with those sweet memories comes the bad one, the one that ended it and left Dean as destroyed as the day he set out on the road in his car in search for the meaning of love. He can still feel the cooling tear stains on his cheeks as his lover left Kansas to go back home, leaving Dean with nothing but a broken heart. And with the end of that relationship, it was his best friend that picked his sorry ass up and got him to work the next morning.

Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you.

Warmth seeps into his fingers moments before he flicks his cigarette and opens his eyes to watch the sparks fly when they connect with concrete. He can still taste the bitterness of beer on the back of his tongue as he reaches into his pocket for a lighter and another cigarette.

His mind travels through his past until it lands on the day he finally find the life he had always been searching for. The two of them had been having lunch at a diner... Dean smiles through a tear as he recalls the scene like it will forever be ingrained in his skull.

Castiel had just come from church, saying that this new minister was a little too old school even for him. Dean had just shook his head with a smile and asked him why he even went to church. The blue-eyed man had stared right into Dean's eyes and said, "I have faith. Maybe I don't follow the Bible as though it is absolute rule but I believe in something more. I choose to believe that God has a higher plan for us all."

Dean comes back to the present to turn his head and gaze up at the house he had built. It was small, just a cabin, but it held everything that Dean would ever call his life inside of it. There was a man in there waiting for him, a man that no matter what tragedies came never lost his faith. Sometimes Dean wonders if God really is out there, because if he had then Dean would have to thank him for leading him into Castiel's loving arms.

I think about the years I spent just passing through
I'd like to have the time I lost and give it back to you
But you just smile and take my hand
You've been there you understand
It's all part of a grander plan that is coming true.

Without finishing his latest cigarette, Dena discards it under his boot and starts his trek home. It's a few simple strides until he is coming in through the door but tonight it feels like he has walked miles to be here. Thinking back on all the years Dean had had his heart closed to the one person who was actually what he was looking for, he wishes suddenly that he could have all that time back.

If he could go back to that day he had driven his dad's car to Castiel's house, he would take the other man in his arms and kiss him until they were both breathless and smiling. If he could go back to the day of his almost-wedding, he would hold Castiel until they both fell asleep on that old futon in his old apartment. If he could go back to the day Benny had left to go back to Louisiana, Dean would have gripped Castiel until his fingers bled and told him he loved him until his voice was hoarse.

Not quite able to discard those thoughts, Dean quickly strips on his way to their bedroom. In complete darkness he still finds his way to their bed and crawls in. There were no snores echoing against the walls so Dean knows his husband is still awake. With as much ease as he can muster, Dean pulls Cas' body against his chest and buries his nose in the perpetual bedhead hoping to smell Cas' shampoo and finally feel like he is where he is supposed to be.

"What were you thinking about outside?" Cas' deep voice is riddled with sleepiness and it makes Dean's heart stutter.

"You. Me. Us." Dean lets out a breath from the bottom of his lungs as he tightens his hold around his husband's frame. "If I would've just admitted that I loved you all those years ago then-"

"Dean." Castiel twists on his side as his fingers find Dean's and intertwine them. Even if the darkness Dean can hear his smile through his words. "It's all part of a grander plan that is coming true."

Dean feels a tear slip through his lids as he presses his lips against Cas' cheek. "I love you."

"And I love you." Castiel caught his husband's lips in a searing kiss full of promises. "This much I know is true, that God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you."

Song is Bless the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts. Not gonna lie, I am not really that big of a country music fan. I mean I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania so I was immersed in country but it never really was my thing. This song is my mother and stepfather's song (both coming out of abusive marriages before they met and fell in love) so this song has a special place in my own heart. I just... I don't know I guess I thought it would be perfect for Destiel. Let me know what you think. I've been writing a lot of song fics recently but I guess it's because I find so much inspiration in music.

Also, if you have a song you'd like me to write a story for.... my inbox is always open...
