Castiel stood in his house's entryway with butterflies fluttering about in his stomach. The dress that Dean had picked out snugly hugging his body in a comforting way. For past two days he has been losing his mind with worry over their date tonight. It didn't help that every time Dean managed to catch his eyes in the hallway he threw a wink his way. So when Friday night finally came around he was a messy jumble of nerves.
Chuck had helped pick out a cute bow for his hair, even going as far as helping to pin it in. Cas knew that he was lucky to have such an accepting father adopt him. Now the two of them were waiting patiently by the door as the clock crept closer and closer to six o'clock. Castiel fidgeted with the fabric of his dress and kept his eyes trained on the plain white sneakers he had picked out. He did own a pair of black heels but he figured the heels wouldn't match the floral dress.
"Your cellphone is charged, right?" Chuck asked with a nervous fatherly voice.
Castiel nodded and grinned at him. "Yes, dad. I have my cellphone and the pepper spray you got me last month. Another good thing about dresses is the pockets."
Chuck nodded, trying to keep a stern face but his excited smile poked through. "I'm so relieved that you are going on a date. I always hoped that you'd find someone."
Just as Castiel was about to lecture Chuck on the fact that most of the time he chose not to date, the door knocked. Jolted, Cas reached shakily for the door before taking in a large deep breath to calm his pounding heart.
Dean Winchester stood proudly on the front porch, a bouquet of yellow roses grasped tightly in front of his chest. A sheepish smile crossed his face when his eyes met Cas' and then Chuck's. "Hi. Wow-" his eyes swept over Castiel, "-you look beautiful. These are for you."
"Well I would hope they weren't for me." Chuck tried to crack a short laugh but both boys were too nervous to make the effort of laughing along. "I'm Chuck Shurley."
"Dean Winchester." Dean held out his free hand to shake Chuck's. "Thank you for allowing Castiel to go out with me this evening, sir."
"None of that 'sir' business. I'm just a lowly writer. Call me Chuck." But Castiel didn't miss the way Chuck's lips curved upward at the polite manners. "I want you to have Castiel home by eleven. Any later and I will call the National Guard."
"Dad." Cas rolled his eyes but stepped forward to take the roses. Their fingers brushed and Cas couldn't take his eyes off of Dean's as he lifted the flowers to press against his nose. Taking a deep inhale, his grin widened and his cheeks reddened. "These are lovely."
"I figured since you liked floral... you would like flowers." Dean flushed deeper and dropped his eyes shyly. "I'm glad you like them."
Chuck looked briefly between the two before taking the flowers from Cas' hands. "I'll put them in some water for you." He leaned slightly and placed a kiss on Cas' cheek, careful not to smudge the carefully applied make up. "I love you. Have fun. Be safe. And all that jazz."
Castiel gave his father a respected nod. "I love you, too. See you before eleven."
As Dean led Castiel down the sidewalk toward his car, Chuck held the flowers close to his chest and felt for the first time since adopting Castiel like he was afraid of his son growing up.

Castiel paused just outside the diner's front door. His eyes raked over the windows where he was able to see many groups of people laughing and conversing over their meals. A deep contentment sat in his chest when he realized that in a couple minutes he would be one of those people. The wind blew enough to sway the dress across his thighs and make him flush at the remembrance that tonight might not go as smoothly as he would dream it would.
