Gone in the Morning

He woke up to the fuzzy feeling of warmth pooling across the skin on his back. Not many mornings he found himself sleeping naked in the plush covers of one of the most successful lawyers in Kansas, but those mornings were by far his most treasured. The sound of rustling from the distance made the cold spot beside him more prominent which meant that it was already later in the morning and he should be heading out.

This was the worst part of those mornings, when the mornings ended and he was brought back to dull days with nothing but loneliness ebbing at his thoughts. If only he could stay in these mornings forever and never let the man he had allowed himself to fall in love with leave him.

When they started out this 'relationship', Castiel thought that he'd be able to simply enjoy the sex they shared and be able to move on from it. But with every passing night he spent with Dean it was becoming harder to imagine a day when Dean would call it quits, when Dean would find someone more permanent to settle with, when Dean would throw him out, when Dean would finally see that Castiel wasn't even worth the nights they spent together.

As these thoughts brought up an eruption of tartness to the back of his tongue, Castiel rolled over onto his back and stared up at the numbingly white ceiling. In his dreams he could form a world where he woke up to those white ceilings and fell asleep under them every day. In his wildest dreams he could carve a world where Dean would love him just as much as he loves Dean.

"Move the meeting to three." A deep voice rumbled from somewhere off in the apartment. "I don't care if they are being particularly stubborn this morning. I have plans."

Plans. Castiel closed his eyes and fought off the feeling of being not good enough. With a heavy heart he swung his legs over the side of the bed and sat up only to feel the soreness of a great night ache in his back muscles. He took a breath with his head in his hands before deciding whether to wait till Dean left to make his escape.

"You're finally up." Dean's voice was warmer than the feel on sun on his skin. "Thought you were gonna be asleep all day."

Cas slowly raised his eyes to see Dean leaning against the doorway of his bedroom with nothing but low hanging loose sweat pants. Odd, Dean was usually already in a suit by the time he woke up. "My apologies. You wore me out."

The laugh rumbled up through Dean's chest and found a way to make Cas' lips turn up. "It has been a rough week, man. And you pounding me into my mattress was the highlight of it. Hope I didn't hurt you too bad."

Cas winced as he shrugged. "I am fine."

An awkward silence set in as the two just seemed to stare for some type of answer to the silence. Usually Dean called Cas the night before, they would have their fun, Dean would leave early in the morning and Cas would leave without seeing him again until he got another call. Cas knew from listening to Dean's phone call that he had plans, so with almost pain in his heart he stood and made for his clothes which were pooled at the foot of the bed.

"So-uh-you got work?" Dean asked almost hesitantly.

Another odd thing. Dean never asked what Cas did outside of their nights together. "It's a Saturday. There are no classes on Saturday, but now that I think about it I do have some papers I need to grade."

Dean fell into a silence as Cas started to step into his jeans. "Do you like waffles?"

"What?" Cas almost tripped as he spun around with only one leg in his jeans.

A beautiful flush came across Dean's cheeks. "Waffles. I would make pancakes but-uh-I don't think I have any mix. I keep Egos in my freezer for when my niece visits. I could make you some if you're hungry."

Still pretty much naked, Cas couldn't help as his eyes widened. "Breakfast?"

"Yeah." Dean smirked a little as the tension fell from his shoulders. "The thing people eat in the mornings."

"I know what-" Cas nodded with a smile when Dean cocked an eyebrow. "Right. That was a joke."

"So?"

"I like waffles." Castiel finished putting on his jeans with shaking hands. "Do you have any coffee?"

"Sure." Dean turned before pausing in the doorway with his back to Cas. "Did you mean it?"

"Mean what?"

"What you said last night." Dean twisted his head and looked at Castiel with so much vulnerability it made his knees weak. "When you said that you would always take care of me."

"I-" He had said that aloud? "I-"

Dean took the silence and nodded with a frown that drained the color from his cheeks. "Right. Throws of passion and all that. I'll get you those waffles. Don't want to grade papers on an empty stomach."

Before Cas could let this man slip through his fingers he cleared his throat and let it all pour from him. "I meant it. I still do mean it. I did not believe you would want that of me. Maybe it was selfish of me to say that when I knew that you didn't want me except for a warmth in your bed. But I care about you, Dean. I have for a long time. I never wanted to admit it to you in fear that you would stop this when you found out my true intentions. I didn't want to lose you, even if I never truly had you."

As the last words fell from Cas' lips, the room was clouded with tears, he was sent stumbling back as the solid weight of Dean hit his chest. Arms wrapped around him holding him steady as the two clung together in the morning sunlight.

"I love you, Dean." The courage for those words came when a precious kiss pressed against his neck.

"Love you, too." Dean squeezed him tighter. "I didn't know until you said it. I am an idiot. Please don't walk out that door. I don't like when I lose you ever morning."

Castiel couldn't help the smile ache against his tear soaked cheeks. "I won't go."

"Promise me."

"I promise."

Dean pulled back to smile with goofy giddiness. "Let's get you those waffles."

It wasn't until Castiel was being led toward the kitchen with Dean's hand in his that he realized Dean's plans were him.
