Castiel listened quietly to his husband's fingers lightly drumming across the table top. There was a lot of noise in the bar that night but all he could focus on was the light tapping that made his breath catch. It was still new to him, only being married for a couple months now. The knowledge that he would have this man at his side for the rest of his life. Eternity was a long time and for it to be filled with Dean Winchester made Cas' lips curl up into a smile.
"This place ain't half bad." Dean remarked idly as his eyes swept over the place.
Castiel nodded without having to say anything. There were days that went by when Cas thought that maybe Dean wouldn't have married him, that Dean would pack up and move on to someone who was more talkative or more manly or just more human. His husband also joked at Cas' robotic behaviors but sometimes Cas couldn't believe the man still came home every night to their bed. The bed they both picked out only a year after dating.
"You want a beer?" Dean waited for Cas' nod before scooting out of the booth. "I'll be right back, sweetheart."
Blue eyes watched as Dean shuffled through the crowd toward the bar. Castiel wondered momentarily if maybe Dean wouldn't come back. Maybe he would just melt into the crowd and get lost. Cas hated thinking these things but he had been abandoned by everyone else in his life before Dean. His family disowned him when he decided that he didn't want to follow in their footsteps and he became a writer. The books he wrote, full of gay romance, only fueled his family to loathe him more.
Cas twisted back in his seat to stare at the empty seat across from him. He had met Dean four years ago when they were both at a book store looking for Vonnegut. Their fingers had bumped when they both reached for Cat's Cradle and from there it sparked a friendship. A friendship that over a few months turned into a relationship. A few more years passed and they were engaged, Dean asked him out at Cas' favorite park where he would watch the kites in the wind. Now there was a golden band on each man's finger.
It amazed Cas that they were still together, still tethered to each other's life. He knew that Dean was it for him, that he would be alone for the rest of his life the day Dean left him. But he knew Dean was adaptable, that Dean could leave and find happiness no matter where he went. Cas felt guilty thinking this, with the images of their wedding day still burned into his memory, but he couldn't help feel as if he would never be good enough for the perfect man who shared his home.
It felt like hours went by as Cas sat staring at the empty seat Dean had left. He turned his head and searched the bar to find where his husband and ventured to. His gut twisted cruelly when he saw a man leaning close to his husband and laughing. Dean was a flirt by nature, but it only made Cas' thoughts turn dark. In his mind he saw the scenario where Dean got up and left the bar with this man as Cas sat there waiting.
Something snapped in him. All the years of fearing that Dean would leave finally broke something in Cas. He didn't want to fear anymore. Tonight he would do something about it. Taking a deep breath, Cas stood from the booth and easily navigated through the crowds of people. The closer he got to the bar the harder his hands clenched.
Cas saw red as he stepped up beside his husband and allowed his hand to unclench as he set it atop Dean's shoulder. "You get me my beer?"
Dean turned his head to grin widely at Cas. "Yeah, babe."
Castiel grabbed the beer from Dean's outstretched hand before turning his attention on the man who had slowly started to back up. "Hello." The deathly glare behind the words was definitely noticed by the man.
"Uh-hey." The man seemed unsure of what to do as his eyes went from Dean's to Cas'. "I was just-"
"This is Bartholomew." Dean stated coolly as he twisted his body to sling an arm around Cas' waist. "He was just trying to convince me to leave with him tonight. Even after I was telling him about how much I love my husband."
Castiel looked at Dean with a bit of awe. "Really?"
Dean tilted his head. "Yeah. Like I would leave this place with him when I got the perfect man waiting for me back at our table. Ain't that right, Bart?"
Bartholomew held up his hands with a look of worry creating lines in his forehead. "Sorry. Thought you were using the husband card-"
"Do you see the ring?" Cas snapped at Bartholomew, feeling the fear of abandonment turn sour with anger. "Or are you blind to only see what you want to? This man is taken. I would think that much is obvious. And even if he was lying, he obviously wouldn't want you if he had to go so far as to create a husband."
Dean grinned wickedly at his husband. "You tell him, Cas."
Bartholomew, mouth gaping open a bit, stayed still before bolting away from the bar and toward the exit.
Castiel turned toward Dean with a level look. "Were you being serious?"
"About what?" Dean asked as he took a swig from his beer before turning fully and bringing his husband flush against his chest.
"That you think I'm the perfect man."
Dean's eyes melted into a warmth that settled something deep in Cas' mind. "Course I am. I love you, sweetheart. I've been gone on you since the day I met you. Sure, people still hit on me but I don't see the appeal when I know you're here."
"Oh." Castiel closed his eyes before the tears spilled. He didn't want to cry in this bar but a weight was suddenly coming tumbling down from his shoulders. Dean loved him. Dean wasn't going anywhere. Dean didn't want anyone else.
"Yeah, 'oh'. You really think I'd cheat on you?" Dean's lips pressed lightly to his forehead. "I love you, dumbass. Only you. You're the only man I see."
Cas swallowed the lump in his throat as he blindly searched for his husband's lips. "I love you, too."
After that night Castiel no longer felt the worry eating away at his heart like acid.
