Cas' short tongue started to run over his lower lip in concentration as his eyes stayed glued to the project in front of him. The trench coat collar from his Halloween costume was rubbing uncomfortable against the back of his neck but he didn't mind. When his step-father, Chuck, had asked him what he wanted to be for Halloween, Cas simply said 'a detective' and decided on Chuck's trench coat and a darkened fedora (like the detectives in the old movies he loved to watch before bedtime).
For just a moment, as the crayon stilled on his paper, Cas' eyes rose and met his best friend Dean's eyes. They were seated across from each other, just as they always were. Cas smiled stupidly at the way Dean's batman masked tilted to the side a little and his cape was swept up over the table. Before Cas could go back to his project, his teacher grabs hold of the paper in front of him.
"What did you write for your greatest fear, Castiel?" Mrs. Harvelle asked sweetly as her eyes grazed over the writing.
Cas felt his eyes fix on Dean's and a light warmth lace his cheeks. "Please-"
"'My greatest fear is losing Dean. He is my bestest friend and I want to grow old with him. I like when we get to have playdates, he is always so nice to me even when other kids are mean. I like that he is always there and I hope he never goes away.'" Mrs. Harvelle stops and stares down between the two boys.
Dean's face broke out in a crinkling smile as he snorted. "Cas, you are such a nerd."
Cas dropped his eyes and fumbled with the sleeves of the trench coat. "I'm sorry-"
"Course I'd never leave you, dumby." Dean's light chuckle brightened Cas' whole atmosphere. "Next year how about you go as Batman and I will go as Robin?"
"But you are always Batman." Cas broke his eyes back up and smiled softly.
Dean shrugged and discarded his crayon. "I'll be Robin just for you, buddy."
Mrs. Harvelle held onto Cas' paper as the two boys shuffled from their seats and almost ran toward the little spot in the back of the room with the toys. She watched as Dean sat down close to Cas and put a little protective arm over his shoulder as Cas started to babble about something that had Dean laughing.
TWENTY YEARS LATER
"Dean! We are going to be late!" Castiel screamed through the house.
Dean didn't move, his arms tucked around himself as he stared at the framed piece of paper hanging in their bedroom. Every morning before work he made a point to let it catch his eye. Every time he saw the scribbling green crayon of Cas' kindergarten Halloween project, he felt like he got more than he ever deserved.
"Daddy?" A small voice questioned softly from his left.
Dean turned and dropped his gaze to his beautiful daughter. She was standing impatiently in the doorway with her hand plump on her waist. The witch costume she was wearing made her seem older, and Dean couldn't help but get chocked up a little.
"Daddy, come on! We need to get da good treats before all the other kids do." Quinn whined as she held up her hands and squeezed them in an attempt to get Dean to pick her up.
Without hesitance, Dean waltzed over and swept his daughter into his arms before placing a small kiss on her forehead and drawing her close to his chest. "Alright, sweetheart, let's get going."
Quinn's green eyes flickered over the framed paper that Dean had been almost crying over. "Was that what Dad wrote to you?"
Dean nodded before placing another sweet kiss on her head. "Yes, sweetie, a long long time ago."
"And that's when you knew you loved him?"
Dean smiled with a tear in his eye. "Yes, that's when I knew."
