Prompt for anon: I found a headcanon that I think should really be turned into a fic: someone asks Cas what his last name is and since he doesn't have one, he doesn't really know what to say but then one of them (preferably Dean) says it's Castiel Winchester.

'

The bar they had gone to tonight was almost too raunchy for even Dean’s taste. But the three of them had closed a case and were ready to blow off some steam. Even Cas was a little excited about going out for a few drinks. Dean had noticed how much Cas had wanted to be with him and Sam since he became human. Sam noticed but discarded it as Cas simply wanted to learn the human world from them.

Cas had walked over to the far end of the bar to read a poster on the wall. Dean took another long drink from his beer and clashed it on to the bar. Sam smirked slightly as his eyes met those of a beautiful red head across the dance floor.

“Dude, hot chick checking me out. Catch you later.” Sam punched his brother’s arm with pleasant excitement before grabbing his beer and ditching his brother.

Dean rolled his eyes but smiled at the thought of Sam letting loose a little and having a good time with a girl. They both knew it was due time for Sam to move on to another woman, even if just for the night. Dean planned on going home solo tonight. The hunt had taken a lot out of him and rest after a few beers seemed like paradise.

His eyes raised across the bar when Cas had returned. He would never admit it, but Dean was extremely protective over the newly made human. Understanding the horrors of the world made him want to shield Cas from as much of it as possible.

Cas was fumbling with his hands as a woman stood in front of him. It surprised Dean how attractive this woman was but it surprised him more how much of a dork Cas looked. Dean realized that Cas was uncomfortable so he stood from his bar stool and made his way over to rescue his guardian angel.

“Cas? That’s your name?” The woman shook her head slightly. “You don’t got a last name?”

“No. I don’t.” Cas muttered as he shifted uncomfortably.

“You have to have a last name.” The woman persisted as she inched closer.

Dean felt like shoving her away but the question she was asking Cas was the only reason he was acting so weird. Figuring Cas would maybe actually have a shot with this girl if he had a last name, Dean walked up closer to Cas and opened his mouth.

“His last name is Winchester.”

Cas’ eyes peeled up and met Dean’s with confusion. Dean grabbed his shoulder and squeezed it in reassurance before turning back to the woman.

“I just told him that most of the time the ladies around here wouldn’t need to know it. He’s new to the bar scene.” Dean explained smoothly to the woman.

She nodded with an even bigger smile and eyed over Cas. Proud of himself, Dean dropped his arm from Cas and was about to turn to leave them alone when Cas spoke up.

“Castiel Winchester.” His voice was as deep as it had been the first time they had met.

“It sounds very manly.” The woman purred seductively.

Dean couldn’t help the pang in his chest at the full name spoken outloud. He wanted to turn and look into Cas’ eyes, the same eyes that had gotten him through countless nightmares, but he swallowed the feeling and quickly retreated to the bar. He didn’t know why the name kept popping up in his mind, he meant it like they were brothers. But something nagging kept telling him that they would never be brothers.

Sleep was still clawing at Dean’s mind as he walked into the kitchen of the bunker and found Cas propped on a chair scribbling frantically on something. Dean just rolled his eyes and trudged toward the coffee pot. Most mornings Cas acted weird, so no one batted an eye this morning.

“Dean?” Cas’ eyes lifted as he saw the hunter fiddle around with the coffee pot. “Did you sleep well?”

“I sure did. Couple a beers takes me right out.” Dean smirked when he remembered where he had left Cas last night. He turned and leaned back against the counter. Their eyes met and locked. “Did you go home with that chick last night?”

Cas shook his head and flushed a little before dropping his eyes back to whatever he was writing. “No.”

“Oh, well did you get her number?”

“No. I didn’t find her worth it.” Cas muttered as he dropped the pen from his hand and stared down proudly at his work. “Did you mean what you said last night?”

“About what?” Dean turned back and started to pour out a tall mug of coffee.

“About my name. Castiel Winchester.”

“Course I did. You are a part of this family now, Cas.” Dean smirked and went over to sit across the table from his fallen angel. Their eyes met again and Dean almost choked.

Cas was staring at him with the widest smile Dean had ever seen of his. His entire face was glowing with this light Dean didn’t recognize. “I am happy that you think so.”

“Yeah, sure, I thought it was pretty much a given.” Dean took a sip from his mug but didn’t let his eyes leave Cas’.

Castiel picked up the paper from the table and handed it over to Dean, still managing to keep their eyes locked. Dean took it without a second thought and looked down at it. On the torn notebook paper was scribbled ‘Mr. Castiel Winchester’ over and over in the most elegant handwriting Dean had ever seen.

“Jeez, Cas, it looks like the ramblings of a teen girl who is in love with a guy.”

“Oh, I didn’t mean it like that. I just… I never had an official name before. I like the ring to it.” Cas shifted a little and fumbled again with his hands. “Sam told me that the only way someone gets their name changed without going to a legal place is if they get married.”

This time Dean choked on the coffee in his mouth and gaped up at Cas. All night Dean was up thinking about the name he had given Cas. It never settled in him as just a casual thing. But now, with Cas saying it out loud, he couldn’t help but come to terms with it.

“I didn’t mean-“

Cas held up his hand and silenced Dean. “I didn’t want to go with the woman, because Castiel Winchester wouldn’t do it. Castiel Winchester… he doesn’t want anyone else. When you gave me that name, it just sounded like you were marking me as yours. This bond we have… maybe it carried over.” Cas’ eyes peered into Dean’s but his face soon fell when Dean stayed silent. “I just… I am sorry-“

“Next time we go out, it’ll just be me and you. We’ll go to a restaurant or something.” Dean gripped the paper tight in his hands and had a feeling of never wanting to let it go. What Cas said was true, Dean had been keeping Cas close by giving him the same name. It made it seem like Cas was really close to him. That they were still bonded in some way or another.

Cas grinned widely with a nod. “That sounds wonderful, Dean.”

“Castiel Winchester.” Dean said it again just to let it slip from his lips. It just tasted right to him as it rang in his ears and pounded in his chest.
