"Do you remember the day I first asked you out?"
"How could I forget?"
"I thought you would say no."
"And I thought you were going to vomit all over me."
-TEN YEARS EARLIER-
Castiel Novak shuffled through the hallway on his way to his locker. The day had been rough, a note taped to his back reading 'faggot' was just the icing on the cake. He'd take it off, but there wasn't really a point. Plus, he thought almost out loud, he was a faggot so there was really no shame in keeping the note taped to him. It was a label, he hated labels, but it wasn't an untrue one. The strength was out of him to care anymore.
Yesterday the basketball team decided that his new nickname was 'nerdy faggot'. Very original, Cas thought bitterly. He'd been bullied before coming out of the closet for being a nerd and a teacher's pet and above all his favorite 'a sci-fi freak'. Yes, being the only gay nerd in all of his high school wasn't the most fun way to go through his days. But he was who he was and he wasn't ready to hide it because some smallminded twats decided he was a freak.
His locker opened with a squeak like it did every day. His books dropped listlessly inside as he grabbed his newest Dickens novel to read at home. He didn't mind being a nerd when he was able to finish all of his homework in class and free up time when he got home. What he didn't expect was for someone to clear their throat behind him.
Cas ignored it, expecting it was to someone else. Someone who wasn't invisible. But as he shut his locker and turned to the side to duck out of the school, the throat clearing came again only a little more persistent. Castiel turned on his heel and met the eyes of the wrestling team's captain (one of the few jocks in the school who hasn't bullied Cas).
"Yes?" Cas asked as he clutched his book to his chest. All he wanted was to go home, he was exhausted and his bed sounded like heaven.
"Uh-" Dean (that was his name Cas recalled) scratched the back of his neck and that was when Castiel started to pay attention to his features. The kid was gorgeous, of course he was he had all the girls flocking all over him day in and day out. But he was breathtaking, Cas would lie if he said he never dreamed about the star athlete. Green eyes, soft cheeks that filled with redness at this moment, and a face chiseled from the most smoothest skin Cas recalled ever seeing.
"If you want me to do your homework, save your breath, okay? I don't do that. I don't take shit from you guys anymore." Cas was used to this, people stopping him and asking him for notes or cheats and he was sick of it. "Find some other nerd to wail on."
Cas was about to turn but he stopped when Dean furrowed his brows in confusion. "I don't want your homework, man. I-uh-was just wondering... if you... yknow-" Dean rubbed at his neck again, his eyes dropping down to the ground. Maybe it was the lighting but he looked to be paling. "If you're not busy tonight I was wondering ifyouwouldwanttogooutonadatewithme."
"What?" Cas squinted and tried for the life of him to figure out if he heard 'date' muttered under Dean's breath in that clumsy sentence.
Dean lifted his head and met Cas' eyes with almost dread. "I wanted to know... if you would go on a... datewithme."
Cas couldn't help the bark of laughter that erupted from his throat. He couldn't help but find this outrageously funny. Here was the star athlete of their school, getting flushed over asking the school nerd out on a date. There was a part of Cas that thought he might be doing it as a joke, but the way Dean kept fidgeting told him he wasn't.
Dean's eyes dropped. "Sorry-"
"I wasn't laughing at your request, Dean." Cas took a slight step forward, closing some of the distance. "I was just laughing at your delivery. I am free tonight."
Dean's face broke out in a smile that sent Cas' heart shuddering. "Awesome! I have my car if you want to like go to a resturaunt or the movies I know you like yknow like comic books and stuff and I saw they were playing the new Marvel movie downtown so like we could do that if you want I mean only if you-"
"Slow down, Dean." Cas chuckled but nodded slightly. "The new Marvel movie sounds great. Do you want to go now?"
Dean nodded enthusiastically with a nod. "Hell yeah."
Another soft chuckle broke out of Cas as he turned and waited for Dean to walk beside him. "Thanks for asking me out, Dean."
Dean snorted and rubbed the back of his neck, ducking his head to hide the blush. "Uh-you're welcome. Thanks for saying yes, Cas."
-PRESENT DAY-
Dean curled around his husband's torso, reveling in the thudding heart under his palm. The new Avengers movie played out in their living room. The two of them snickered at a joke, and subconsciously pulled tighter to each other. Cas pressed his lips softly to Dean's hairline as an explosion burst on the screen.
"I still can't believe you said yes." Dean whispered, memories of their first date coming back when Captain America's face came back over the screen.
Cas chuckled and ran his fingers lovingly through his husband's hair. "I can't believe you got the nerve to ask me out. I thought you were going to have a stroke right there in that hallway."
"You laughed at me." Dean huffed with a pout.
"I laughed with you, darling." Cas snickered and placed a kiss on the tip of Dean's nose.
Dean rolled his eyes and yawned quietly. "I love you, Cas." He buried his head in his husband's neck and kissed softly over his pulse point. "Could fall asleep right here."
Cas marveled at the weight in his arms and the warm breath grazing over his neck. "Go ahead, baby. When the movie is over I will carry you to bed. I love you, too."
When the movie ended, Cas cradled a snoring Dean in his arms and carried him toward their bedroom like he does most nights they settle for a movie. Cas lays Dean's limp body on the bed but pauses before crawling in to hold him. His eyes rake over the soft kind features of Dean's face, the way his face scrunches in his sleep and his fists clench and unclench.
Cas would never be able to form words as to how lucky and happy he feels to have the shy jock from ten years ago laying in his bed, with his wedding ring on his finger, and their adoption papers spread out on their kitchen table.
