"I don't understand." Cas grimaced as his hand plummeted into the orange goo. His face scrunched even deeper when he felt the chill that grasped his hand as his hand searched deeper into the pumpkin in need of scooping out the unnecessary filling.

Dean smirked as he watched carefully to the simple lines that defined Cas' cheeks and forehead. It had been a tough year, with Castiel giving up his grace in order to be with Dean, and every second of it was spent meticulously showing Cas just how wonderful being a human was. When the end of October rolled around, pumpkin carving became Dean's obsession with Cas.

"Just get all that shit out of there, and then we carve awesome shapes into the sides of the pumpkin." Dean smiled to himself as he kept the secret of how beautiful pumpkins were when you set a light in the center on a warm October night. He wanted to see the genuine joy in Cas' eyes that always flickered when he discovered something new and wonderful about simple things here on Earth.

Cas let out a short groan as he continued to scoop the pumpkin out like it was the worst thing he had ever done in his entire eternal existence. In that moment, Dean fell in love with the angel all over again. Watching those mesmerizing blue eyes study the way the pumpkin clung to his fingers, and the way his head would tilt just slightly (almost to slight for anyone other than Dean to notice). Moments like these made life worth living. Every morning Dean woke up with a plan to see the light that emanating from Cas' entire soul. His job used to be to save people, but now it was to simply love Castiel.

"What are you going to carve?" Dean asked as his pumpkin was nearly drained.

Cas bit his lower lip in the way that sent Dean's heart fluttering. "I am not sure, what are you going to carve?"

"Probably the bat symbol." Every year Dean always made the most intricate carvings. His skilled hands that were used so frequently to carve demons, were skillful on pumpkins as well. But he didn't want to make anything crazy this year, he didn't want to suck his time and attention into a silly pumpkin. He wanted his entire mind to be focused on the adorable man across from him who was groaning at the pumpkin now embedded under his finger nails.

Finally, the two pumpkins laid empty on the table between the two men. Their eyes met just as Dean grabbed hold of a carving knife and held it out to Cas with a smirk. Cas rolled his eyes as he snatched the knife and craned his back so that he could better get a hold of the pumpkin.

"What-"

"It's a surprise." Cas interrupted as his brow deepened with concentration and Dean could just see the way Cas' arm started to lift and fall.

Dean bent down and started to easily etch out the bat symbol, but it wasn't looking as well as anyone would guess. How could it when Dean's eyes were glued to Cas' adorable concentrated face the entire time? Every few seconds Cas would let out a groan or a sigh and it made Dean smile all the wider. The silence between them warmed Dean harder than any fire ever could. He never was a fan for silence, always thinking they were awkward, but with Cas it was comforting. Words didn't need to be spoken, he finally had a connection that went between silly words slipping from his mouth.

After what felt like hours, and after Dean had already finished his butcher job on his own pumpkin, Cas let out a sigh of content and stood up with a proud smile. As if he was a child running down the stairs on Christmas morning, Dean bolted from his stance and ran around the table to look at the pumpkin. Not in his wildest dreams did he imagine what he saw. Etched perfectly into the pumpkin, was a pop art rendition of Dean's face.

The hunter's mouth went slack as he felt his cheeks redden shamefully. If he wasn't such a manly man, he might have cried. The carving was magnificent, and no where near as horrible as Dean had planned for it to be. The lines that connected his face were flawless, it was as if his face had really been plastered into the walls of the pumpkin.

"Do you like it?" Cas asked meekly.

"Holy fuck, Cas." Dean exhaled as he pulled his boyfriend into a rib crushing hug. "It's fucking beautiful."

Dean could feel the warm smile against his neck as Cas let out another sigh and melted into the hug. "You said that most people carve what they love, and there is only one thing I love in the world."

That was it, Dean's whole body began to shake like any moment his skin would burst. No one had ever said anything as sweet to him before. This whole time Dean had been wanting to woo Cas, and make this special for Cas, but in the end Castiel made this the best Halloween Dean had ever had.

"Let's see yours." Cas playfully shrugged out of Dean's arms and ran giddily around the table.

Dean groaned internally when he remembered how he had purposefully made his pumpkin look like shit in hopes to make Cas feel better. Now he looked like an untalented five year old. But as his eyes met Cas', he saw a cute little smirk appear.

"It's very good, Dean." His angel squinted a little and flushed. "I mean-it's very unique."

Dean rolled his eyes as he chuckled and scooted around the wrap his arms around his boyfriend's waist. Their eyes fell on the horrid bat symbol.

"You were always a horrible liar, Cas." Dean pecked a short kiss on his boyfriend's neck. "Next year, my pumpkin is going to kick your pumpkin's ass."

"I look forward to that, Dean."
