Dean wasn't quite sure when the pet names started, he wasn't sure if he started them or Cas. All he knew is that once it started, it became a regular thing between the two of them. Sam would raise his eyebrows at them, but didn't say anything about it.

"Hey, angel, find anything?" Dean asked one night in the bunker while they were researching a case.

Cas, from across the table, with his head buried nose deep in a thick volume shook his head. "I don't think so, righteous man."

And that's how it went. Dean would call Cas things like 'angel' and 'babe', and Cas would always answer it with some weird almost comical nickname. It started as just 'righteous man' but morphed into 'sweetheart' and 'darling'. Dean knew that this isn't what friends called each other, but every time that gravel voice answered his he couldn't complain.

It wasn't until one night when it was just the two of them that it all came crashing down to Dean.

"Babe, is there any beer left?" Dean asked from where he was bent over inspecting the open fridge.

Castiel was seated at the kitchen table, with a book in his grasp. "I don't drink beer, Dean, and even if I did I would not know since I am not the one staring at the fridge."

Dean rolled his eyes and shut the fridge with a heavy sigh. "Dammit. I'm gonna make a run to the store then."

As he was searching his pockets for the keys to the impala, warm lips pressed against his cheek. "Be careful, beloved."

Everything in Dean's mind stopped functionally. He sucked in a breath and glanced up to see Castiel standing mere inches from himself. Those blue eyes were innocent, completely thinking that kissing another man's cheek and calling him 'beloved' was nothing out of the ordinary.

"Cas?" Dean's voice squeaked but he cleared his throat and set his jaw. "What was that for?"

The fallen angel tilted his head and squinted his eyes until the blue was swallowed completely. "I just want to make sure you are careful. Automobile accidents-"

"No." Dean raised his hand and motion to his cheek. "The lip thingy with the cheek. Dude, what was that?"

"A kiss." Cas stated so simply as if it was obvious. "Is that not what boyfriends do-"

"Boyfriends?!" The word, even coming from his own mouth, sounded like a punch to the gut.

Pain ebbed into Cas' eyes as his face fell. "Did I misconstrue the pet names? You do understand that I am still not acquainted with some jokes, Dean. And if that was you trying to be funny then I am sorry."

He paused, trying to come up with words to explain that they were nothing more than friends. But he couldn't because in his own mind he couldn't seem to mind the fact that Castiel thought they were together. All the shared smiles and nicknames, all the late night movie marathons, all the food sharing, it all seemed to lead to one conclusion.

"You didn't misconstrue anything." Dean sputtered out as he rubbed the back of his neck nervously. How could he think for a moment that he didn't want this? "You just caught me off guard, that's all."

"Okay." But it sounded hesitant. "I should-"

"You should come with me." Dean met Cas' eyes with a short smile. "I know a great movie playing in theaters, angel, and I really think you'd enjoy it."

"Really?" The light childish spark in Cas' eyes made Dean's heart sputter.

"Yeah." Dean reached out and lightly pressed his palm to the side of Cas' neck drawing the other man closer. "Afterward we can go out for a drink or something."

"Like a date?" Cas whispered, but his smile broke through so miraculously.

"Exactly like a date, babe." Dean closed the distance between them and pressed their lips together. He loved the way Cas gasped against him, the way the fallen angel's hands clung to his shirt, and especially the way those lips moved against his.

When they broke to catch some air, Cas rested his forehead against Dean's cheek and laughed softly. "Does this mean we can hold hands now? I was waiting because Sam told me-"

"Sam? You talked to Sam about this?"

Cas pulled his head back slightly and searched his eyes. "Yes. I talked with him after you called me 'babe' and he went through the things that boyfriends do. I wanted to hold your hand, but Sam said you might not be ready for that yet."

Dean huffed. Of course his brother was slightly in on this. Without hesitance Dean reached his free hand down and intertwined their fingers. "Anything else you'd like to do with your boyfriend, angel?"

The smile that grew on Cas' face heated Dean's entire body. "I can think of a few things, darling."
