"Maybe I am not understanding this correctly, are you saying that Grace hit another student?" Castiel's voice was level, almost calm enough to border on tempered.
The principal nodded slowly with a face that was masked professionally of any emotion. "There was an altercation in her art class. It seems that a student made a comment she didn't like so she punched him."
Dean was trying his hardest to keep the proud smile from his face. "What comment did this kid make?"
At this the principal lowered his eyes to his desk. "The teacher said that it was a gay slur."
Castiel's face flashed anger before it settled back into a peaceful stare. "A gay slur?"
"The student said that Grace is an abomination because her adopted parents are abominations. Before the teacher could stand in the student went on to say that men marrying men is what is wrong with this world." The principal cleared his throat. "Then your daughter punched him across the face."
Dean grinned widely. "Good."
"Dean." Castiel sent his husband a deathly glare before turning his attention on the principal. "I would like to apologize for our daughter's violent outburst. We raised her better than to combat words with fists. She will be punished for her choice of retaliation, but not for standing up for what she thought was right."
The principal met Cas' eyes with the first sign of emotion. "Usually when a student punches another we suspend them or even expel them. But under the circumstances, I refuse to give Grace anything more than a few detentions. I understand that what happened was under circumstances that were not her fault but the fault of ignorant opinions bred into children from homophobic parents. I hope you understand that she will still be punished."
"Of course." Castiel nodded. "I appreciate that you will not be suspending or expelling her."
Dean looked at his husband with confusion. "Cas, you can't be serious. Our daughter punched that kid because-"
"I am deadly serious, Dean." Castiel turned his eyes over to his husband's as if they were alone in the room. "Do you think that I don't understand the weight of what that other student said to her? There will always be people out there who will say things like that. There will always be obstacles Grace must overcome. But I will never allow her to resort to physical violence to solve anything. Our daughter will not beat people."
Dean shrunk back into his seat a little, realizing that Cas was right. Their daughter shouldn't be hitting people because it would only lead her down troublesome paths later in her life. "Right. Yeah. You're right."
The principal cleared his throat bringing back both their attentions. "Grace is a wonderful girl. I see nothing but promise in her future. I know that it is difficult to grow up with two fathers. My fathers taught me that no matter what prejudices I face that I deal with it with my words. I hope the same for Grace."
Castiel smiled for the first time in this meeting. "Thank you. I hope so, too."
Dean was staring at the principal with awe. "You have two fathers?"
"And I turned out just fine." The principal smiled warmly. "There were times when it was tough, but the good times outweighed it. Maybe someday a kid can have two same sex parents and not have to worry about prejudice. Until that day we hold our heads high and thank God every day for our families."
Castiel and Dean held each other's hands as they made their way out of the principal's office. A new hope sat deeply in their chests as they picked Grace up from the school lobby. On the way home they talked to her about what better ways she could deal with the prejudice.
The next time anyone said something negative about Grace's two fathers, she simply told them that they loved her more than anything in the world and that much love can't be a mistake.
