Prompt from anon: Cas asks Bobby for his blessing to marry Dean

'

"What is it, boy?" Bobby raised an eyebrow over his half empty beer.

Castiel shifted in his seat nervously and started to open his mouth but shut it. Anxiety coursed through his veins, sweat poured coldly down his neck, and for the first time since he started to date Dean Winchester he was honest to God scared that he was going to mess everything up. When Bobby cleared his throat Cas straightened his back and tried to settle the bitter taste in the back of his throat.

"I wanted to ask you for something." Cas' voice was meek and came out as nothing more than a childlike whisper. He knew that Bobby loved him, he knew that Bobby had always held Cas close by as he would a son. But what Cas needed seemed like such a profound thing, that he didn't know what Bobby would say or how he would react. All of his life teetered on this one question.

"Spit it out." Bobby smiled nonchalantly and took another swig of his beer before shifting and giving Cas his complete undivided attention.

"I need your blessing to marry Dean."

The room went silent and in that moment Cas saw his entire world slip through his fingers. If Bobby said no, there was no way he could ever face the Winchesters again. A father's blessing was so important to Castiel. His entire future rode on the simple answer Bobby was about to speak.

"That's all?"

Cas shot his head up and let his mouth gape a little at the insanely abrupt question that was Bobby's response. "I'm asking a lot, Bobby. I need your blessing or I won't continue to see Dean."

Bobby let out a heavy sigh and smiled warmly at Cas. "Kid, you don't need my blessing. The way you two look at each other, I thought you were already married. I respect you for valuing my opinion, but I am not Dean's father."

"I know that." Cas frowned a little. "But you are the closest thing Dean has as a father. He looks up to you as one. If he hadn't told me about John, I would have assumed you were his real father."

Bobby actually flushed a little, which Cas had never seen him to before. "That means a lot, Cas. Thank you."

Cas nodded and leaned back to take a light breath. This was going better than the worst scenario in his mind, but he still didn't get a blessing from Bobby. "So?"

"So." Bobby caught Cas' eyes and held them. "You love him?"

"Yes."

"You gonna treat him right?"

"Yes."

"You've seen him at his worst, I know you have, and you still want to stick around?"

"Yes."

"Marriage is a lot, Cas. It is binding. It is a bond that will never be broken, at least in my book. I want to be sure that you understand this. You won't be able to just walk away from Dean when he gets bad again. You will be stuck with him." Bobby squinted his eyes and seemed to search Castiel.

"I know what I am doing, Bobby. I have carried the ring for three months now. Every moment I am with him, I try to come up for one reason not to marry him. I never can." Cas cleared his throat and gave back a subtle stare to Bobby. "I love him, Bobby. I want him to be my husband because I know that I will never let him go. I want to get a house with him, adopt a baby, and grow old with Dean Winchester by my side."

Bobby sat back and smiled wide enough to cause little wrinkles around his eyes. "You were the first boy Dean brought home that I actually like, Cas. Hell you were the only person he ever brought home that I think made Dean happy."

"Thank you."

"I have never seen Dean smile so much." Bobby let his eyes wonder as he sat back in thought. "From the moment his mother died, and his father left... there was so much trouble inside of him. Years of this darkness that never seemed to leave him. Then he comes home one day with a brilliant smile on his face, brighter than the fucking sun, and he explains that there is this new boy in his chemistry class."

Cas flushes as he himself remembers his first day meeting Dean, nine years ago.

"Just like you were an angel sent from heaven, you brought Dean back into the lighter side of the world. Every night you were over he joked louder than I ever heard. He laughed, God how I had missed his laugh. All because of you." Bobby turned his eyes back to Cas with glistening traces of tears. "And you want to know if I will give you my blessing? You really have to ask me?"

Cas didn't move, because he really didn't know what to say to that.

"You have my blessing, son. If I was a preacher I would marry you two myself." Bobby rubbed a hand over his head and chuckled to himself. "I never in a million years thought Dean would find someone who would ask me for a blessing in marriage. I never thought he would find love, and how you proved me wrong. I love you like a son, Cas. Having you a part of this family would make me very honored."

Cas bit his bottom lip as he felt tears choke up in himself, he had never been a part of a family before. "I love you, too, Bobby. I promise that I will protect this family."

"I know you will. You already healed it more than you will ever understand." The older man stood up and wiped at his eyes before clearing his throat. "Sam is bringing Gabe over tonight for dinner. Why don't you bring Dean too? We will have one big family dinner like old times."

"I haven't asked him yet-"

"Then the secret will be between me and you." Then Bobby did something neither of them expected. He maneuvered around the table and pulled Cas up into a bone crushing hug. Bobby didn't let himself feel embarrassed as he embraced the son he never had. "Just humor me and let me enjoy a night of seeing you two so disgustingly happy together. Make a father proud that his sons are finally happy."

Cas grinned as he felt more tears but only hugged onto Bobby tighter. "We'll see you tonight."
